Bible Study

Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.   2 Timothy 2:15

Why should I study the Bible?

We should study the Bible because we love God and because we want to obey the one we love.

We should study God's Word because we need help.   We need lots of help to navigate this life we have been given.

We need help, we need God's help to live this life we are given in the way that God intended.  We need God's help to show us our purpose in this life and help us achieve our God given purpose.

We are not just to know God's word, but God desires us to live His Word every single day of our lives.

How can we live God's Word, if we do not know God's word?

Every believer should set aside time in their day to meditate on God's Word to spend time with God.   The blessings, strength, power, wisdom of God are written down and given to all people to profit from.

And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.   2 Timothy 3:15-17

If we neglect our Scripture study with God, we will fail, we will be wide open to the lies and deceit of satan, we will not be able to discern truth from lies, we will not see God's plan and His will for our lives.

We are to embed God's Words deep inside our heart, in our spirit, in our soul.  We must allow the Holy Spirit to engrave the words of God on the fleshy tables of our heart (2 Corinthians 3:3).  When we allow the Holy Spirit access into our Bible Study, into our heart, we will find that we can use these words of God for the rest of our lives, when we are in trials, when we suffer pain and loss, in joy, and when we are given the opportunity to witness to a lost soul.

All the precious promises of God are written down in His Holy Word, that by His grace and mercy He desired to so freely gift to all the people of this world.

Reading God's Word is not only a commandment from God but a great honor and privilege.  It is a privilege for every faithful believer to have in their possession God's written word, and it is a privilege to be able to read His word every day.

There are still many parts of the world today, which do not have access to God's written word.  Many people today do not possess a copy of God's Holy Word, the Holy Bible, in their home to pick up and read any time they want.

We are so blessed to live in a country where we have the freedom and right to read God's Holy word anytime and anywhere we choose.   This freedom may not always be so.  No one but God knows what laws this country will hold in the future, what freedoms and rights that we enjoy today will not be here tomorrow.  We should never take lightly, or for granted, the freedoms we enjoy today.

Tell God you love Him every day.  Thank and praise God every day that He gave you His written word, and that you are able to read His word whenever you desire.

The Joy of the Lord

I was reading 1 John 1:4 this morning, where it says, And these things write we unto you, that your joy may be full.   Yes, we are given God's word to show us the way to Him and for our reproof, for our correction, for our instruction in righteousness, but also that we may be full of joy

I am full of the joy of the Lord today, are you?  Are you lacking, are you wanting more out of this life?  May I suggest that you pick up and read the Scriptures, the one and only Holy Word of God given by inspiration of God, and He will fill you overflowing with His love, His peace and joy!

How to begin any Bible Study?

Pray

Shew me thy ways, O LORD; teach me thy paths. Lead me in thy truth, and teach me: for thou art the God of my salvation; on thee do I wait all the day.  Psalm 25:4-5

Before conducting any Bible Study, whether in a group or alone, pray for guidance from the Holy Spirit to teach you God's Word.   We are to seek God's guidance; we are to ask God to teach us His word.  We are never to rely on our own understanding of God's word, because His Word is too important.

Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.  Proverbs 3:5

Praying before studying your Bible is of utmost importance, as by praying we ask to receive God's teaching, His truth, His knowledge, not our own.

Why should I pray first? You are to pray first because you already know what you know.  You want to know what God's knows, you want to be shown God's truth in His word, you want God's wisdom, you need to learn God's word from God.

When we rely on ourselves or others to teach us, we limit the power of God's Word, we limit the power of the Holy Spirit to teach us His truth.  Reading the Bible without the Holy Spirit's guidance, you are missing out on vital instruction and blessing from God.

You can pray a prayer like this one, from your heart.

Prayer before Bible Study:

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank you for this day you have given me.  I praise your Holy name.  I honor and worship You!

I thank you and praise your Holy name for gifting me with your Holy Word.

Thank you for giving me this opportunity to study Your word.  I pray the Holy Spirit will open my eyes and my heart to your truth.

I pray the Holy Spirit will guide my thoughts and teach me what You have planned for me to learn of You today.

I pray this is Jesus name.  Amen.

As always, when you pray to God, use your own words when you pray.  God desires to hear your prayers every day, and pray every time you open His Word.

With no exceptions, every believer needs guidance from the Holy Spirit to read and understand God's Word (John 14:26).  We make a mistake when we try and read God's word without Him leading us and guiding us to His truth (Proverbs 3:5).

Yes, many people read the Word of God without the Holy Spirit's guidance, and many people fail to hear God's truth.  Without the guidance of the Holy Spirit when reading the words of God, people interpret the Word incorrectly and conceive their own meanings and own doctrine (Matthew 15:19).  The wisdom of men cannot begin to compare with the wisdom of God.  God tells us over and over again, not to be deceived.  Anyone is capable of being deceived.  No one is exempt from the Word of God.

Scripture defines people who create their own knowledge of the Bible, apart from the guidance of the Holy Spirit, as having a form of knowledge, a form of godliness, forever reading the Word of God, ever learning and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth, because they refuse the salvation of God and the Holy Spirit's guidance (2 Timothy 3:1-7).

Reading Scripture without the guidance of the Holy Spirit is how false doctrines are begun, when men and women lean on their own understanding, forming their own manmade theories and doctrines, instead of seeking, pursuing, and hearing the words of God from God Himself, taught by the Holy Spirit (Proverbs 3:5).

And it does matter if you are reading one verse, always pray first and ask God for His guidance in learning His word.

Is salvation required to study the Bible?

Anyone who can read, can physically read the Bible, but they cannot be led by the Spirit of God to the true understanding of His Word, unless they are made new in Christ Jesus through salvation.  Why?  Because God tells us in His Word that the natural man, who is without salvation, cannot receive the things of God, because the things of God are spiritually discerned (1 Corinthians 2:14).

In order to conduct a Spirit led Bible study, be led and taught by the Spirit of God, you must know God, know Jesus and know the Holy Spirit, you must be born again (John 3:7; 1 Corinthians 2:10-13, 16).  Why?  Because the very Word you study tells us all, that the natural man cannot receive the things of the Spirit of God (1 Corinthians 2:14).

But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.     1 Corinthians 2:14

Through the gift of God (Romans 6:23), the salvation of our soul (1 Peter 1:9), which is by the grace of God through faith in Jesus Christ for our salvation (Galatians 3:26), we receive the Spirit of God (Romans 8:9, 14-15).  Our eternal, internal spirit is renewed at salvation, born again by the Holy Spirit, allowing us to hear and understand the deep things about God, which the Holy Spirit reveals to all God's children (1 Corinthians 2:10).

The lost, all those apart from Christ Jesus, all who are not saved, the unrepentant souls, the unregenerate hearts cannot comprehend the deep things of God, because they are without Christ, without God, without salvation, they are without the indwelling of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 2:11-14).

When a person is born again, by the grace of God through faith in Christ Jesus for their salvation, that person is given the gift of the indwelling of the Holy Spirit (John 3:3, 7; Titus 2:11).   The Holy Spirit comes to dwell inside every person who abides in Christ Jesus.  Without the indwelling of God in our spirit we are without God, we are without the Holy Spirit, we are without Christ Jesus.  By accepting the free gift of salvation from God, we are given the fullness of God, who is Jesus Christ, and we are given the Spirit of God, the Holy Spirit to guide us and teach us the things of God and to comfort us and help us in our salvation (Ephesians 3:16-18).

The Holy Spirit is required to truthfully learn the Word of God, because He alone can teach us the Spirit of God because He compares spiritual things with spiritual (1 Corinthians 2:13).

What is the purpose of a Bible Study?

The purpose of a Bible study is to learn about God and about the things of God from God and His Word.

The purpose of a Bible study to discover the wonder, the glory and the majesty of God.

The purpose of a Bible study is to discover for yourself God's truth.

The purpose of a Bible study is so we will be able to discern truth from fiction, know good from evil, know God's will for our lives and how to apply what we read in His Word.

God has no limits to what He is willing and able to teach us, if we will only ask Him, if we will come to Him.

The One true God, our Lord, our Saviour desires that we come to the knowledge of His truth (1 Timothy 2:4).

One way that we come to the knowledge of God's truth is through study of His Word.  When we meditate on His Word we fulfill His will for our life.

Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.  2 Timothy 2:15

Can there be a wrong way to study the Bible?

We have discussed the right way to study God's word, but is there a "wrong way" one could study God's Word that should be avoided?

The purpose of a Bible study is to conform ourselves into Christ, mold ourselves into God's image, into God's ways.  We are not to study God's word to only learn His Word, but to conform our lives to His Word.  The ultimate goal of every believer is to conform oneself to the image of Christ, to have the mind of Christ, to be joined to Christ, and unless we know what that is we cannot achieve it.  We learn through God's Word how to apply our faith, which God has gifted to us (Romans 12:3), how to apply the precious salvation that was bought for each of us at such a high price.

A person can memorize every word of the Bible, but that will not do him any good, if it is not applied in the right way, by God's way.

Even satan knows every word of the Bible.  What satan and many people miss, is the application of the word, applying it to our lives, doing what is taught to us by God through His Word.

The action, the application, the practice of the word is the ultimate goal of studying the Word of God.

Purpose

The purpose and intent of one's heart should be examined when studying the Word of God.

It is wrong to study God's word with selfish intent.  We fail if we study God's Word to develop a religion that fits into our lives.  The Word of God was not given to mankind to develop a religion to fit our lives, but to discover God' truth for our lives, so that we can have a relationship with God.

The Word of God was not gifted to mankind so that we could mold it to fit our lives, but so that we could be molded and shaped to God's will and purpose.  We study to bring honor and glory to God, never to honor and glory in ourselves.

The purpose of a Bible study is to discover God, never to develop a religion.  This is what is meant by the Scripture, ever learning but never able to come to the knowledge of truth (2 Timothy 2:7).  Just because one can quote Scripture or reads a Bible every day, does not mean that they know God, or have come to His knowledge of the truth.

Do not be deceived, the devil knows every word of God, but the devil remains for eternity without God and without the salvation of God.  The devil manipulates the word of God to hurt people and separate them from God.  Even when the devil quotes Scripture is it for self seeking gratification, not to help anyone, as the devil has ulterior motives.  Just as the devil, many people use God's Word to promote evil and their own agenda.

If you are studying the Word of God to prove a personal opinion, you will not find the Truth of God.

For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.   Hebrews 4:12

Yes, the Word of God is a weapon, but it should never be used to prove your point, to support your own theology or doctrine, to control someone, or to beat someone up with.  Knowledge of the Word of God should never be used to promote one's own agenda's or any self promotion.  Knowledge of the Word of God should never be used for the main purpose of profit.  We must seek God's truth with a pure heart, with pure motives.

We must empty ourselves of "self" before we begin any Bible study, we must come before the throne of God and ask the Holy Spirit to teach us God's truth.  We seek God's truth, not our own idea of God's truth.

It is all about God

Bible study (just as everything else to do with God) is about God, not us.  God is our priority, God is our focus in every Bible study.

Our focus is to be on God, not ourselves, and not what we will benefit, but how we can give.

Gift of love

We lovingly give God our time for Him to show us His truth.  Genuine Bible study is a matter of one's heart, when we seek God out with all our heart because we love God, and when we earnestly desire above all else to be filled with Him completely - body, mind, soul and spirit.

How are we to handle GOD's Word?

How we handle the Word of God is how we handle the God of the Word.

We are to handle God's Word with reverent holiness, as it is the words of God.  All Scripture, God's Holy written word, is given to mankind by God (2 Timothy 3:16).

Bible study is not to be taken lightly because it is serious business.  God is holy and His things are holy and are to be handled with holiness.

God did not have to give us His Word, His holy Bible, but He did.  God chose to gift us with this precious gift.

The Word of God, the Holy Bible, is the eternal and living word of God.

Bible study is to be handled in reverence and holiness.  Within the pages of the Word of God are contained instructions pertaining to eternal life and eternal death.  Think about that!   No other teaching is as serious as the Word of God.  No other teaching truthfully instructs us into our eternity.  No other book in this world is given to us from God Himself.  No other book holds the Truth, God's truth, only His Word holds His revelation, the revelation of God Himself personally gifted to us.

It is incredible for me to fathom that the God of all creation, the Creator of all things, the One who hung the stars and planets, the One who created every living thing, the God who breathes life into every human being, loves me so much that He would give me His Word, His Words, so that I could learn from Him personally, of His truth, and so that I might live forever with Him.  The Living Word of God is incredible!  My Savior is awesome!  My Lord God is amazing!

The ability to study the Bible is a privilege that not everyone is able to do.  Many people around this world do not have the freedom to study God's Word.  Many people around this world cannot afford to purchase a Bible and they do not have Bible studies.   We who can hold God's holy word, we who can read and study Almighty God's written words are so intensely blessed!!   Let us never forget this precious gift we have from God.

Dear Heavenly Father, Thank you for your love.  Thank you for loving us so much that you gifted each of us with your Holy Word.  Let us never forget how precious your gift of your Holy Word is to us.  Remind us, teach us, guide us with your Word.  I love you and thank you.  In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

How long am I to study the Bible?

For the faithful believer, Bible study is a lifestyle, a continuous study and meditation of the Truth with God.

No one has a hobby doing something they hate.  Our hobbies are focused on the things that we love.  Our lives are wrapped around things we love to do.

We marry the person that we love.  We spend time with people we love.  We choose to interact and converse with people we love.

You study who you love.  You want to please the ones you love.  You want to spend time with those you love.  You want to know everything about them.  You want to tell everyone you know about how wonderful they are.  This is the love relationship that God desires to have with everyone.

I love God and I love everything about Him, I love to study His Word.  I can't get enough, I want to know more, I want everything that God wants to give to me, I want to share everything I have and everything I am with my Lord.

I want to share everything that I know about God.  I want everyone to know God the way I know Him, personally and intimately.

The study of God's word is endless, because His word is living, just as God is living.  His ways are past finding out (Romans 11:33).  No human being will ever figure out, find out, know all the wonders of God.

We can study and search His word all the days of our lives and still find something new within its pages.  Why?  Because the Word of God lives, it is alive.  The living word of God doesn't change.  God doesn't change, but we do.  Every day we grow and change.  God gives us all that we need in Him.  God is sufficient to give us everything we need in Him, through Him, through His word.

2015 Bible Reading Form

The 2015 Bible Reading Form is ready for you to download.  This PDF form helps keep track of my personal Bible Reading.  I print this off on one page, using front and back of paper, fold it and place it in my Bible to help keep track of what I have read.  I place the date next to the Bible book when I have completed reading that book.

On my form, most books will have several dates by them at the end of the year because I read them more than once.  I personally do not read from Genesis to Revelation, although many people do.  Reading God's Holy Word should be a comforting experience.  Don't rush through your reading.  Always pray before reading any of God's Word for guidance from the Holy Spirit to teach you and guide you to the truth of God's Word.

Reading the Holy Bible through each year is a goal every Christian should embrace.  Reading the Bible through is in addition to studying topics or people.  Reading the Bible through is in addition and separate from my daily study of Holy Scripture.

Click Here to Download the 2015 Bible Reading Form

(You need to have a PDF reader to read and or print this form.  There are many places on the web to obtain PDF readers, simply type in PDF readers in your browser and several options should appear.  Your computer may have one already, if it does, after you download this form it will present several options to read and or print, follow the directions on your computer or other electronic device.)

Show God how much you love Him today by reading His word today!

Meditate upon these things; give thyself wholly to them; that thy profiting may appear to all. Take heed unto thyself, and unto the doctrine; continue in them: for in doing this thou shalt both save thyself, and them that hear thee.  1 Timothy 4:15-16

I love the LORD God and I love His precious Holy Word!

Prayer - We believe to receive the full benefit from any Bible Study, to conduct a successful Bible Study, to participate in a Spirit-led Bible Study, one must surrender themselves over to God in holy prayer.   Through prayer we thank our Heavenly Father for gifting us with His Holy Word, we tell God how much we love Him and His Word, we thank Jesus for coming down to earth, leaving His Kingdom to become the propitiation for our sins, so that we might be reconciled with God, and we ask the Holy Spirit for His guidance as we study the Scriptures with Him.

Promise - If you ask God to lead you in your Bible Study, ask Him to guide you where you need to be, God promises that He will!  Ask for the wisdom of God to lead you to the Scriptures that you need to read today.  Everything we do with God is sealed with His promise.  The promises of God are eternal, from everlasting to everlasting.
