The End of the World

This is a Bible study on the End of the World.    Click here for a printable Bible Study Guide.

The end of the world - the time is at hand.

And as he sat upon the mount of Olives, the disciples came unto him privately, saying, Tell us, when shall these things be? and what shall be the sign of thy coming, and of the end of the world?   Matthew 24:3

The Revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave unto him, to shew unto his servants things which must shortly come to pass; and he sent and signified it by his angel unto his servant John: Who bare record of the word of God, and of the testimony of Jesus Christ, and of all things that he saw. Blessed is he that readeth, and they that hear the words of this prophecy, and keep those things which are written therein: for the time is at hand.   Revelation 1:1-3

What is the End of the World?

The word of God tells us that the earth, the world as we know it, will "pass away", will end (Mark 13:32; Luke 21:33).

Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away.  Matthew 24:35

The end of the world will be when the firmament heavens and earth are destroyed by God.

The end of the world is NOT the end of existence of mankind, but the very beginning of eternity

Every human being that has ever been created by God will exist in eternity.  Death is not the end of existing, it is the beginning of eternity.

Human death on in this universe, only extinguishes the mortal body.  The spirit, the soul, the mind, of every person exists eternally, beyond this earthly life.

God explains in His Holy Word, that death is not the end of any person's existence.

And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:  Hebrews 9:27

This discussion is about the actual end of the world, when this world, this earth no longer exists.

When is the End of the World?

When shall these things be?  What shall be the sign of thy coming, and the end of the world?

In Matthew 24, we find that these same questions were asked of Jesus.

And as he sat upon the mount of Olives, the disciples came unto him privately, saying, Tell us, when shall these things be? and what shall be the sign of thy coming, and of the end of the world?  Matthew 24:3

There are many details to take note of in this one verse:

  1. Jesus was sitting on the mount of Olives The mount of Olives is a very important place of history and future events. This event takes place in the very spot where Christ will set foot when He returns to earth again. This event is referred to as the Olivet Discourse.
  2. The disciples are privately asking Jesus "Tell us, when shall these things be? Who asks the questions, determines the answer. It is important to notice that Jesus' disciples, believers of Christ, are asking the questions AND that Jesus answers are for His disciples, all believers of Christ. Additionally, the question wasn't to determine if they would happen, but when. There was no doubt in the hearts of the disciples that these things would indeed occur.
  3. "and what shall be the sign of thy coming, and of the end of the world" There are four very important elements here, that the disciples knew as fact: (1) The disciples knew there would be signs to occur BEFORE the return of Christ to earth (2) The disciples knew that the Second Coming of Christ was BEFORE the end of the world (3) The disciples knew Jesus would return to earth (4) The disciples knew that there would be an end of the world

Take heed that no man deceive you

Next, look at Jesus' response, Jesus answered and said to them" - He is speaking to believers, His disciples.  We are all Christ's disciples, by faith in Him to salvation (Galatians 3:26; Matthew 12:47-50; 1 Thessalonians 5:9).

Jesus answers His disciples first with a warning - "Take heed that no man deceive you". - "Don't be deceived", "Look out", "Beware", "Be on guard that no one deceives you" Why?  Because Jesus knows what the future holds, Jesus knows that many of His own disciples will be deceived.

And Jesus answered and said unto them, Take heed that no man deceive you.  Matthew 24:4

Too many Christians falsely believe today, that they are exempt from being deceived by anyone, especially the devil.

Who is Jesus speaking to in this verse?  That's right, His disciples, devoted men of God, true followers of Christ Himself.

This warning from Jesus is for all believers in Christ, "take heed that no one deceives you".  No one means just that, no one - not your family, not your church, not your pastor, not your friends, not teachers, not leaders, not media, not books, not speeches, not anyone or anything, and especially not the devil.

Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:  1 Peter 5:8

Remember, the devil is pursuing believers in Christ, not unbelievers - he already has them deceived.  The devil is seeking true believers of Christ Jesus, he is pursuing the children of God, not his own children of disobedience.  The devil could care less about his followers, his minion, his own.  The devil wants Christ's followers, the devil is out to devour, deceive and destroy the children of God.

How will the devil deceive so many followers of Christ?  Any way he can.  The devil will stop at nothing to deceive people into believing his lies and turning them away from the One True Living God.   To steal and to kill is the mantra of the devil and his demons, they care for no one.

Many deceivers will claim to be Christ and deceive many

Jesus tells us that in the last days many people will say that they come in God's name, and even claim to be Christ, AND will deceive many people.

For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many.  Matthew 24:5

We know by reading the news, that many people have already came, claiming to be Christ.

There are people all around this world, today, claiming to be Christ, AND they deceive many.

Before the return of Christ to earth, there will be more - more deceivers, more people saying that they are "from God", claiming that they are Christ, and deceiving the lost and the saved, deceiving not only those without Christ, but many people with Christ.

Wars and rumors of wars

The question was, "What shall be the sign of thy coming, and the end of the world?".  Jesus says that there will be wars and rumors of wars, this will happen, BUT the end is not yet, more is to come before the end.

And ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars: see that ye be not troubled: for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet. For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places. All these are the beginning of sorrows.  Matthew 24:6-8

Jesus continues and says, "all these things - nation warring against nation, kingdom against kingdom, famines, pestilence, earthquakes - are just the beginning of sorrows".  When this happens it will be the beginning, not the end.

Serious and even fatal persecution of believers in Christ

Killing of believers and hatred of one another will be common place.  There will be no loyalty even among the world, hatred will breed and infest every family, every nation, no one will escape the extreme racism based on beliefs of God.

Then shall they deliver you up to be afflicted, and shall kill you: and ye shall be hated of all nations for my name's sake. And then shall many be offended, and shall betray one another, and shall hate one another.  Matthew 24:9-10

False prophets will rise and deceive many

And many false prophets shall rise, and shall deceive many.  Matthew 24:11

Remember, Jesus is speaking to His disciples.  He didn't say that they be exempt from the deception, but He said many will be deceived.

You may think that there are a lot of false prophets in the world today, but before the return of Christ to earth, this number will be greatly increased.

These false prophets will deceive many into believing their words from satan.

Sin replaces love

And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold.  Matthew 24:12

Here, Jesus is telling us what happens when sin is increased, sin extinguishes love.  The fire of sin, puts out the fire of love.

We are either on fire with lust, or on fire with the love of God.   Because iniquity will abound, the love of many will wax cold.

Sin hardens the heart against God, and against love, because God is love.  Sin destroys anyone's relationship with God.

Since Christ will not live with sin, you either have Christ living in your life, or sin living in your life, no one can have both.

No one can hold onto the love of God, and also hold onto sin - one or the other must go.

Have you ever met someone whose love has waxed cold?  There love was hardened, waxed over.  There was no fire, no spark, dead cold.

Satan is void of love, he is fueled by hatred.  This is why God sees hatred as murder, hate is the total opposite of love.

Whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer: and ye know that no murderer hath eternal life abiding in him.  1 John 3:15

Salvation during tribulation

God does not change, He is the same yesterday, today and always.  The salvation of God is the same for everyone, received as a gift of God by His grace through faith in His Son Jesus Christ.

The laws of the salvation of God never changes, anyone who believes in Christ Jesus will be saved, anyone who endures to the end, the same shall be saved.

But he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved.   Matthew 24:13

Salvation is the same for old testament saints, the same for new testament saints, the same for present day saints, and will be the same for tribulation saints, and for millennium saints, ALL that endure unto the end, the same shall be saved.

We are all saved the exact same way, by grace through faith.  We all become the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus to salvation, there is no other way.

The gospel of Christ will be preached in all the world

This is a sign the end is close, when the gospel of the Kingdom of Christ is preached in all the world, for a witness unto all nations.

And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come.   Matthew 24:14

The abomination of desolation

Here, we know that Jesus is speaking to more than just His disciples, when He says - whoso readeth, let him understand.

When ye therefore shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, stand in the holy place, (whoso readeth, let him understand:)  Matthew 24:15

This will be the coming of the end.  Jesus warns people to run away, all who are in Judaea when the abomination of desolation occurs.  The instant you know about it run, don't go back to your house for stuff, just leave every thing and get out of there.  Jesus feels special compassion for all the mothers with small babies, because He knows what a hardship it will be for them to run into the mountains with their infants.

Then let them which be in Judaea flee into the mountains: Let him which is on the housetop not come down to take any thing out of his house: Neither let him which is in the field return back to take his clothes. And woe unto them that are with child, and to them that give suck in those days! But pray ye that your flight be not in the winter, neither on the sabbath day:  Matthew 24:16-20

Worse time in the history of the world

Why the urgent plea to run away?  Because this will be such a horrific time in history, worse than the world has ever seen since the beginning of time, or will ever see again.

For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be.  Matthew 24:21

There has been great horror throughout the history of this world.

Wars, destruction, bombs, disasters both natural and terrorism, but nothing in the world's history will compare to this time.

Great tribulation will attach itself to every living thing on this planet, every person will be affected, no one will escape.

Tribulation will be shortened.  Unless it is stopped, the great tribulation on the earth will kill every person.

And except those days should be shortened, there should no flesh be saved: but for the elect's sake those days shall be shortened.  Matthew 24:22

Because God's children cohabitate the earth with unbelievers, God chooses to end the tribulation, shorten those days.

Not for unbelievers, but for the elect's sake, for the believers in Christ Jesus, God chooses to end the great tribulation.

The devil, the antichrist, the false prophet, the unbelievers, no one except Christ Jesus ends the great tribulation.

Warning again of false Christs

This is the second time Jesus warns His disciples of false signs, and false Christs in the end of the world, "believe it NOT".

Then if any man shall say unto you, Lo, here is Christ, or there; believe it not. For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect. Behold, I have told you before. Wherefore if they shall say unto you, Behold, he is in the desert; go not forth: behold, he is in the secret chambers; believe it not.   Matthew 24:23-26

Double, even triple warnings from Jesus, regarding false Christ, should tell you how very deceitful they will be.

"They shall deceive the very elect".  Jesus is warning His disciples, all His believers, that before His actual return from Heaven and descend to earth for the second time - that many false Christ and false prophets will be in this world, showing great signs and wonders, to the extent that, if it were possible, they will deceive the very elect, the believers in Christ.

"Behold, I have told you before".  Jesus knows that He is repeating Himself, He knows that He must repeat, because this is so important for us all to understand.

The world will say, "Christ is come, he is here in the desert, he is in the secret chambers, come see him".

Jesus says, "Don't go", don't fall for their lies, "don't believe it".

Why? Because it is NOT the Christ, it is NOT Him.

How do we know this?  Because Jesus says exactly how He will return and exactly with will happen at His Glorious Return!!

For as the lightning cometh out of the east, and shineth even unto the west; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.   Matthew 24:27

What about those who give specific dates?

What about those people who have given dates, saying when the end of the world will be?

Anyone who has given any date as to when the end of the world will be or the return of Christ Jesus, God says is a false prophet and you should not listen to such people.

Do not be deceived, God tells us in His word certain events must occur before the end comes.

And Jesus answered and said unto them, Take heed that no man deceive you. For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many. And ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars: see that ye be not troubled: for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet.  Matthew 24:4-6

People who give dates are liars and deceivers, false prophets.  And we know they are false prophets because it didn't happen.

And many false prophets shall rise, and shall deceive many.  Matthew 24:11

What about those who claim to be Christ returned?

What about people who claim to be Christ returned?

And Jesus answered and said unto them, Take heed that no man deceive you. For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many.   Matthew 24:4-5

And many false prophets shall rise, and shall deceive many.   Matthew 24:11

We know that Christ Jesus has NOT returned because God said every eye shall see Him come in the clouds.

Behold, he cometh with clouds; and every eye shall see him, and they also which pierced him: and all kindreds of the earth shall wail because of him. Even so, Amen.   Revelation 1:7

What should we do before the end of the world?

We should all obtain the salvation of God, through faith in Christ Jesus.  Believers of God, of Christ Jesus are to watch, pray and wait.

Watch and pray

Watch therefore: for ye know not what hour your Lord doth come.  Matthew 24:42

Take ye heed, watch and pray: for ye know not when the time is.  Mark 13:33

Watch ye therefore: for ye know not when the master of the house cometh, at even, or at midnight, or at the cockcrowing, or in the morning:  Mark 13:35

And what I say unto you I say unto all, Watch.  Mark 13:37

Watch ye therefore, and pray always, that ye may be accounted worthy to escape all these things that shall come to pass, and to stand before the Son of man.  Luke 21:36

Wait

And to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead, even Jesus, which delivered us from the wrath to come.  1 Thessalonians 1:10

Be ready

Therefore be ye also ready: for in such an hour as ye think not the Son of man cometh.  Matthew 24:44

In peace, without spot, and blameless

Wherefore, beloved, seeing that ye look for such things, be diligent that ye may be found of him in peace, without spot, and blameless.   2 Peter 3:14

How will the earth be destroyed?

The word of God reads the earth and all things on the earth shall be burned up, dissolved, melted with fervent heat.

But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up.  Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness,  Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat?  2 Peter 3:10-12

When we are in Heaven, will we think about earth?

When we are in Heaven for eternity, will we remember the things of earth? The word of God reads that we will NOT remember our life on this earth, after this earth is destroyed, and we are with our Lord God.  God says we will not remember our former life, it will not come to mind.

For, behold, I create new heavens and a new earth: and the former shall not be remembered, nor come into mind.  Isaiah 65:17

God says that the former earth will not be remembered or come into our minds.

What events must occur before the end of the world?

We know through the word of God, that certain signs will take place before the end of the world.

The disciples asked Jesus, "What shall be the signs of thy coming and the end of the world?".

Notice that Jesus' second coming and the end of the world are separate events.

Today we are living in the end times

The word of God lists what will happen before the end of the world, what signs there will be, what will be happening in the world during the end times.

Notice how Jesus begins speaking with His disciples, "Take heed that no man deceive you."  Today, as believers are the disciples of Christ, and we too must take heed that no one deceives us.

And as he sat upon the mount of Olives, the disciples came unto him privately, saying, Tell us, when shall these things be? and what shall be the sign of thy coming, and of the end of the world? And Jesus answered and said unto them, Take heed that no man deceive you. For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many. And ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars: see that ye be not troubled: for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet. For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places. All these are the beginning of sorrows. Then shall they deliver you up to be afflicted, and shall kill you: and ye shall be hated of all nations for my name's sake. And then shall many be offended, and shall betray one another, and shall hate one another. And many false prophets shall rise, and shall deceive many. And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold. But he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved. And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come. Matthew 24:3-14

From the Scriptures above, we see that before the end of the world can happen, there must be:

  • Many people claiming to be the Christ, deceiving many
  • Wars and rumors of wars
  • Nation against nation, kingdom against kingdom
  • Famines
  • Pestilences
  • Earthquakes
  • Believers of Christ are hated, afflicted, and killed
  • People will be offended by each other
  • People will betray each other
  • People will hate each other
  • False prophets will be everywhere and deceive many people
  • Sin will be everywhere
  • Love of many people will die
  • People who endure with Christ until the end will be saved
  • The gospel of Christ Jesus and the kingdom of God will be preached in all the world for a witness to all nations

The word of God reads after these things happen then shall the end come.  All of these events have happened and are happening today.  We are living in the end times.

Are you ready to meet Jesus?

Why didn't God tell us when He would return?  Why didn't God tell us when the end of the world would be?  Well, actually He did.  He told us all that the time is near, the time is at hand, the Lord could return at any time.

We must have faith in God in everything, trust in God for everything, including faith in His plan, faith that He knows best, faith that His time is the perfect time.

As believers we are not to worry about the end of the world.  God is the God of peace.  He gives us perfect peace, and perfect comfort, so we do not have to be afraid or worry.

Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.   John 14:27

How do we know there will be a new earth?

God promised us in His Word, that He will create new heavens and a new earth, after He destroys the old ones.

Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness.  2 Peter 3:13

For, behold, I create new heavens and a new earth: and the former shall not be remembered, nor come into mind.  Isaiah 65:17

For as the new heavens and the new earth, which I will make, shall remain before me, saith the LORD, so shall your seed and your name remain.  Isaiah 66:22

And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea.  Revelation 21:1

What happens after the earth is destroyed?

God will create a new heaven and a new earth after He destroys this earth.

God creates a new heaven and a new earth

Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat? Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness.  2 Peter 3:12-13

And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea.  Revelation 21:1

The children of God spend eternity with God

The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God: And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together. For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.  Romans 8:16-18

That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life. For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.  John 3:15-16

Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.  John 5:24

And this is the will of him that sent me, that every one which seeth the Son, and believeth on him, may have everlasting life: and I will raise him up at the last day.  John 6:40

He that believeth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself: he that believeth not God hath made him a liar; because he believeth not the record that God gave of his Son.  And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.  He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life.  These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.  1 John 5:10-13

Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also. And whither I go ye know, and the way ye know.  John 14:1-4

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.  Psalm 23:6

Father, I will that they also, whom thou hast given me, be with me where I am; that they may behold my glory, which thou hast given me: for thou lovedst me before the foundation of the world.  John 17:24

The New Jerusalem will come down from God out of Heaven

And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: or the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea. And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying,  Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them,  and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God.  Revelation 21:1-3
