This is a Bible study on the fear of GOD. Click here for a printable Bible Study Guide.
This Bible Study is on the reverent fear of the Lord, not the fear of other things. For a study on the fear of other things, see Tools of the Devil - Fear.
The dictionary reads fear is to be afraid of, or expect with alarm, or be apprehensive.
There are different types of fear.
The word of God reads the only fear that anyone is to have - is the fear of the Lord.
Fear of the Lord is not the same as fear of things. The world's definition of fear is horror; this is not the definition of fear in this study. When we fear things, we are frightened, apprehensive, and afraid of what will happen. Fear of things results in manifesting and enlarging circumstances beyond their true realities. The fear of the Lord is a reverent awe of God for who He is, not a crippling phobia as in fear of things.
The fear of the Lord is not a frightening fear as when we are scared of someone or something, but an appreciation and respect for every great and wonderful thing God has done and respect and honor for who God really is, because He is the Mighty God of all things. The fear of the Lord is profound respect, reverence, and incomparable awe toward God, and not alarm, panic, or anticipation of danger type of fear. Fear of the Lord is reverent respect toward God for all He is, because of who He is, and for His love and grace so mercifully given to us. God is the Creator of all things - this fact alone demands our fear. God is more, He is the God of all flesh; He is Wonderful, He is the LORD, He is the living God, He is the God Almighty JEHOVAH, He is Master, He is the Highest, He is our everlasting Father, Abba, He is our Holy One, He is Alpha and Omega, He is our Saviour, He is our Deliverer, He is Counsellor, He is The Mighty God, The Prince of Peace - Isaiah 9:6, 43:15; Jeremiah 32:27; Romans 8:15; Revelation 22:13. No one is God, except God - Isaiah 45:21; 46:9. Mankind is certainly not God, and will never become God. For there is One God, and there is none other but He - Mark 12:32. God alone can say "I am God", as God alone is the great I AM.
God is the God of all flesh, the God of all comfort, the God of all grace, the God of Heaven, the God of the whole earth, the God of truth, the God of peace, the God of love, the God of hope, the God of patience and consolation, the God of Glory, the God of the living, the God of salvation, the God of my salvation; the God of hosts, the God of gods, the God of Israel - Psalm 68:20, 136:2, 26; Isaiah 54:5, 65:16; Jeremiah 32:27; Habakkuk 3:18; Matthew 22:32; Hebrews 13:20; Romans 15:5, 13; 2 Corinthians 1:3, 13:11; 1 Peter 5:10; Acts 7:2.
God alone is omnipotent - Almighty God, infinite power and total authority, omniscient - the God of infinite knowledge, and omnipresent - the God present in all places at all times - Revelation 1:8, 11:17, 19:6.
The word of God reads the only fear that anyone is to have - is the fear of the Lord.
Only the Lord God Almighty has the power to save anyone from sin and death, and hell. No one but God can save you from hell. We are to have no fear of man, who can only kill the body, our flesh, which is not eternal anyway. No man can kill another man's soul. We are not to fear death, physical death, the death of this earthly body, because that is not the end for the saved in Christ Jesus. The saved in Christ Jesus live beyond this physical mortal flesh, we have a life waiting for us in Heaven with our Lord. One day soon the children of God will be translated into the Kingdom of God, to be forever with our Lord.
Everyone - all the earth is to fear the Lord.
Believers of Christ Jesus fear God because we love God. All who love God fear God.
The wicked do not fear the Lord. Those who do not believe in God do not fear God. Those who do not have the knowledge of God do not fear God. Those who do not believe in God do not fear God. Those who have not received the salvation of God do not fear God.
Those who choose not to fear the Lord, do not fear God. Those who choose not to believe in the Word of God as the truth of God do not fear God. Those who do not believe in Jesus Christ as the Saviour of the world, do not fear God. Those who choose not to believe in Jesus as the Son of God for their salvation do not fear God. Those who choose to go their own way - apart from God - do not fear God. All people who are without God do not fear God.
Choice. The fear of the Lord is a choice. As believers of Christ, we chose to fear the Lord because He is our Almighty God and Lord and Saviour. Gift. The fear of the Lord is a gift from God by His Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit gives believers the spirit of knowledge of the fear of the Lord. Reverent Awe. The fear of the Lord is reverence to God and awe of His creation of all things. Confidence and Hope. As believers of Christ we choose to fear the Lord because our confidence and hope of salvation is only in the Lord God. Belief in God and His Word. As believers of Christ we choose to fear the Lord because we know that God will judge the world one day we know that sin has serious consequences. Loving God. As believers of Christ we choose to fear the Lord because we love God with all our heart, with all our soul, with all our spirit, with all our strength. Those who love God show Him their love toward Him by keeping His commandments.
The fear of the Lord is a choice
Believers of Christ Jesus choose to Fear the Lord, we choose to walk in his ways, we choose to believe in His truth.
The fear of the Lord is a gift from God
The Holy Spirit is given to us at conversion, at salvation, to guide us into all the things of God, guiding our hearts and minds into the ways of God, teaching us about God - Luke 12:12; John 14:26. This unction is a gift from God - 1 John 2:20.
ReverenceThe fear of the Lord is reverence to our God Almighty, the creator of all things. We should stand in awe of our Lord God.
God alone is worthy of our praise, our honor, our glory, our reverence because of all He is - He is the one and only Almighty God.
Knowledge of God
Understanding the fear of the Lord grows along with our relationship with God. The more we learn about God the more we learn about the fear of the Lord.
There is no one who been converted, who has received the salvation of God, who does not have the fear of the LORD. It is imparted, gifted to all believers.
Wisdom
Wisdom into the things of God comes from God alone. To be wise in God one must surrender themselves totally, faithfully to the Lordship of Christ Jesus. Only through the salvation of God can one become wise in the things of God. The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, not the end. Lots of people in this world, who have chosen to reject God and are therefore without God, think that they are wise. Scripture tell us that the wisdom of the world is foolishness - 1 Corinthians 3:19. True wisdom comes from God above. Without a godly, reverent fear of the LORD you cannot become wise, you cannot have the wisdom of God. The wisdom from God above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy - James 3:17. Godly wisdom is meek, not weak. Meekness is strength in weakness, control over oneself, no matter the circumstances - James 3:13. The wisdom of this world is bitter envying and strife, is earthly, sensual, devilish (James 3:14-16), and believers should separate themselves from it at all times.
Our treasure
The fear of the Lord is our treasure. Not every person receives the salvation of God. Not every person loves God and His word. Not every person follows Jesus to salvation. But for those few of us, who have come to the knowledge of the truth of God, who have chosen to accept God's free gift of salvation, eternal life, the privilege we are given to fear our Lord God is our treasure.
A fountain of life
The fear of the LORD is a fountain of live because it leads us to salvation and keeps us strong in the faith.
He holds our complete faith, our trust and our salvation
Strong Confidence
The children of God who fear the Lord are promised not just confidence, but we are promised strong confidence. Our strong confidence comes from knowing our place in the family of God, which we have because of Christ Jesus. Because we believed in Jesus to salvation we are granted inheritance into the Kingdom of God, we are Christ's own and Christ is God's own - ye are Christ's and Christ is God's - 1 Corinthians 3:23. Do not be deceived. The enemy will try and take away your strong confidence any way he can, because the enemy knows that without it you will not be able to complete the tasks God has planned for your life, without strong confidence you will not lead others to Christ, without strong confidence you will become sick and weak in the faith. The enemy will try to persuade you to fear him, to fear other things, to fear what man can do to you. This is why God tells us over and over and over again in His Word that because we are His we need not fear what man can do to us, we need not fear anything the devil shows to us, and we need not fear even the devil himself - because greater is He - God - that is in us today, than he - the devil - that is in this world - 1 John 4:4.
To hate evil
The fear of the LORD gifts God's children with wisdom to see, discern good from evil. The Holy Spirit will teach our spirit if we allow Him presence into our lives, if we submit our will to God's will, we will be shown great and powerful truth from God. When we put on Christ, put on the righteousness of God, we see the world through the eyes of God and we see the ugly wickedness and evil in this world. The fear of the LORD is to hate evil because evil separates people from God. The children of God conform to Christ and love what He loves and hate what He hates. God never condones sin for any reason. Sin is never excused in the presence of God. As ambassadors of Christ Jesus, we are to hold to a higher standard, a holy standard, that abhors sin, we are to never excuse sin or condone sin for any one for any reason whatsoever. Those without the salvation of God, the wicked do not fear the Lord and the wicked do not hate evil - Psalm 36:1-4.
Judgment of SinAll the world will be judged by the Lord on their Judgment Day.
No one is excused from the judgment of God. The saved and the unsaved will be judged by God. We will all face God one day and be judged on what we did and did not do with our life that He gave to us.
Love shown toward God The fear of the Lord is shown by all who love the Lord God with all their heart, with all their soul, with all their spirit, with all their being. We love God for who He is and we show God our love toward Him through our reverent fear of Him. God is holy and worthy of all our praise and worship. Through our holy fear of God we show God our love toward Him. People who do not fear God, do not love God. Those who do not love God, do not fear God. It is truly sad, but all people do not love God and not all people fear God. All people do not love God and all people do not have reverent holy fear of the God of all creation, the God of all things, the God of eternal salvation. People show their contempt for God everyday by their disobedience, their rejection of His truth and His Holy Word, by forsaking righteousness, by blaspheming His holy name, by taking His holy name in vain, through their disrespect of God and contempt for those who follow Him, by their irreverent comments and actions against Him and His people. Believers of Christ Jesus show their love for God through their holy, reverent, and sincere fear of the one true living God.
There are many reasons why we fear the Lord because He is God, our God who loved us so much He gave us His only begotten Son to pay the ultimate price for our sins. We fear the Lord because only He is able to save us from sin and death. We fear the Lord because He is the creator of all things and has authority over heaven and earth. We fear the Lord because of His supreme Holiness and complete separation from sin and unrighteousness. We fear the Lord because of His promises to those who fear Him, which is to bless us, to keep us save, to keep us from sin and evil, protect us and give us all our hearts desires, and the promise of our salvation. We fear the Lord because He empowers us and enables us to obey Him no matter what the circumstances. We fear the Lord because we love our Lord and it pleases Him.

Judgment of SinAll the world will be judged by the Lord on Judgment Day. God will judge every person's life and everyone will receive their just reward from God.
Salvation
In the fear of the LORD is strong confidence. Do you lack confidence? Learn about God, seek God, pursue the things of God, fear the Lord and the Holy Spirit will give you strong confidence. We learn from God about the things of God. God imparts to all His children knowledge. We receive an understanding through the Spirit of God through salvation. The fear of the LORD is a fountain of life. The riches of God are given to all of His children, all who come to God and receive His gift of salvation. God desires to give all His children overflowing, abundant life, a fountain of life overflowing with His promises and His presence.
Wisdom
Scripture tells us that the fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom - Proverbs 9:10. We need to gain godly wisdom to fulfill our Kingdom purpose. God promises to give us wisdom, all you come to Him and ask Him. The wisdom of God, the wisdom that comes from God to us, is completely different from the wisdom people claim to have in this world. Godly wisdom is not about the things of this world but is about the eternal things of God. True wisdom, godly wisdom, comes from God above and begins at salvation with the fear of the Lord. The children fear the Lord not because He has the power to kill us but because He has the power to save us. The children of the Lord fear Him because He chose to love us and gave Himself for us, so that we could live with Him now and for all eternity. God desires us to be where He created us to be, which is with Him, now, today, and tomorrow, and forevermore.
Want for nothing
The children of God fear the Lord and want for nothing, because the children of the Lord are complete in Jesus. I am nothing without Jesus, but I have everything with Him. The children of God have everything because they have Christ - we are Christ's and Christ is God's - 1 Corinthians 3:23. The children of God can say, "for I have learned, in whatever state I am, therewith to be content" - Philippians 4:11. True contentment, true satisfaction, true peace, true love, true fulfillment, true joy is in a personal abiding relationship with Christ Jesus. All the children of God have Jesus in our hearts, and with Jesus we are never without. Godliness with contentment is great gain - 1 Timothy 6:6. The desires and treasures, the riches of the children of God are not found on this earth. Our treasures are in Heaven with our King - Matthew 6:19-21. We brought nothing into this world and it is certain that we can carry nothing out - 1 Timothy 6:7.
Protection and deliverance
Think about that -"the eye of the LORD is on them that fear Him"! The Almighty God, the Creator of all things, the Lord of lords, the King of kings, has His eye on us, His children, looking after us, loving us, caring for us, every second of every day! How wonderful, how incredible is that truth! If God is for us, who can be against us? There is no greater power than the power of God. God is our protector, God is our deliver, and no one or nothing can stand against God. No one has or ever will care for you like God does. The love of God is greater, is deeper than any love we can imagine. God knew you before He formed you in your mother's womb, God knows the number of hairs on your head (Matthew 10:30), there is no detail about you that God does not know, God loves you, God waits for you in the morning to speak with Him, God joys over you with singing (Zephaniah 3:17). God desires to give you inheritance in His Kingdom if you will be His child.
God's mercyThe mercy of God is gifted to all who fear him.
The mercy of God is beyond our human understanding. No one deserves the mercy of God, but God gives His mercy to us all. We deserve punishment and death for our sins against God, but instead of punishment and death, God gave us mercy, pardon against our crimes against Him, and God gave to us His everlasting love in spite of the wretched creatures that we are. No man deserves eternal life with God, but by His mercy we are all given the choice to choose His salvation over sin and death.
The blessings of God
The blessings of God are as the grains of sand, they are innumerable, immeasurable, never ending. Each and every day is a blessing from God. Every breath you take is a blessing from God. The roof over your head at night is a blessing. Clothes on your back are a blessing. Shoes on your feet are a blessing. Being able to walk and talk is a blessing. Reasoning with your mind is a blessing. Your family and friends are a blessing. Eating food and drinking water is a blessing. We all are given thousands of blessings every day from God. Our salvation is a blessing. The fact that we can pray to God and have Him answer us is a blessing. Being comforted by the Holy Spirit is a blessing. Knowing our Lord God loves us and we can love Him is a blessing. The blessings of God are without measure. From our birth to our death, till we see Jesus, God pours His blessing onto our lives. If we do not see the blessings of God, it is our fault.
Just as we are given God's love, so that we can share His love with others, we are given the blessings of God so that we can share them with others. We are blessed to be a blessing! Everything that God gives to us has a Kingdom purpose.
The word of God is clear on how one knows they are followers of God, because we become like the one we follow. Through faithful obedience we are conformed into the likeness of Christ Jesus. We live in righteousness because we follow the Righteous One. The children of God are transformed by the mercies of God, by surrendering our lives to God, by presenting our bodies as a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is our reasonable service as a child of the Most Holy God - Romans 12:1. The Scripture tells the children of God not to be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is good, what is acceptable, and what is the perfect will of God - Romans 12:2. There is proof that one fears the LORD, and that proof is shown in their lives. By our fruit we are known. People either have good fruit or bad fruit. We either show righteousness or unrighteousness. Matthew 7:16-20 "by their fruits ye shall know them." We become the servants of whom we obey - Romans 6:16-18. "Being then made free from sin, ye become the servants of righteousness" - Romans 6:18.
The salvation of God is a choice that every living soul must make for themselves. We either choose to believe in God or we choose to reject the truth of God. God gives every person a choice - life and death, blessing and cursing - God asks that we choose life, that we choose blessing, that we choose Him over death and cursing - Deuteronomy 30:19.
It will not be well with the wicked, all who do not reverently fear the One True Living Almighty Lord God.
Judgment will come to all people. We will all reap what we sow - Galatians 6:7-8.
There is only one truth - the truth of God; and, there is only one power - the power of God. If you resist God, if you ignore His truth, if you choose to believe a lie, then you receive to yourself damnation - Romans 13:2. There is hope for all who are still breathing. If one turns from sin, repents from sin, and asks God for His forgiveness, and asks for salvation they shall be saved - Ezekiel 18:30; Acts 2:21; Romans 10:13. The wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord - Romans 6:23.
Through the word of God
Knowledge of God is given to all people who come to God for His wisdom, all people who seek God. The wisdom and knowledge of God is not given to everyone, only those who diligently, reverently, fearfully, seek God and His truth. The children of God are to ask God for wisdom; God gives wisdom to all who ask with a pure heart - James 1:5. Our ways are not God's ways - Romans 11:33. We must abandon self, surrender all to God, earnestly, prayerfully, seek and desire God, love God with all our hearts to receive His gifts, His wisdom, and His knowledge. God sees our heart; God knows our heart. God does not look at the outside, at things we try and do for Him, but God looks straight into our innermost thoughts, and He looks deep into our heart, which carries our true self. The Word of God was given to mankind so that we might learn about God, from God Himself. God instructed particular people to pen, write down His words, so that we could know God, love God and establish a personal relationship with Him, and be saved.
Through PrayerSalvation gifts every child of God a personal relationship with Christ Jesus. The children of God are given the right to have a relationship directly with God the Father through Christ Jesus. Our relationship with God is built up with our daily communion with Jesus through prayer.
Through SurrenderWhen we submit ourselves to God, surrender our lives to Christ, we obey God. Through surrender and obedience to God we learn the fear of the Lord.
All day long
There is not a time when we are not to fear the Lord, as we are to have the fear of the LORD all the day long, for each and every day.
We should fear the Lord forever
We are to have reverent godly fear of the Lord forever. Only the one true living God Almighty is worthy of our reverent fear forevermore.
People who fear the Lord need not fear anything else! People who do not fear the Lord fear everything! ??? Not sure where to go from here? May we suggest . . . |
