Hope

This is a Bible study on Hope.     Click here for a printable Bible Study Guide.

Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ; Titus 2:13

What is Hope?

The dictionary describes hope as:

  • to cherish a desire with anticipation
  • trust
  • to desire with expectation of obtainment
  • to expect with confidence
  • a desire accompanied by expectation of belief
  • expectation of fulfillment
  • someone which hopes are centered
  • something hoped for

Believers define hope by the word of God:

  • Hope of salvation

But let us, who are of the day, be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love; and for an helmet, the hope of salvation. 1 Thessalonians 5:8

  • Jesus Christ is our Blessed Hope

Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ; Titus 2:13

  • Hope in the LORD

Be of good courage, and he shall strengthen your heart, all ye that hope in the LORD. Psalm 31:24

What is Hope for Salvation?

Believers place their faith in Jesus Christ and our hope is for salvation.

LORD, I have hoped for thy salvation, and done thy commandments. Psalm 119:166

It is good that a man should both hope and quietly wait for the salvation of the LORD. Lamentations 3:26

The hope of salvation Helmet

The full armour of God includes the helmet of the hope of salvation.

But let us, who are of the day, be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love; and for an helmet, the hope of salvation.  For God hath not appointed us to wrath, but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ,   Who died for us, that, whether we wake or sleep, we should live together with him. 1 Thessalonians 5:8-10

Hope in the resurrection of Christ

Without the crucifixion of Christ and the resurrection of Christ, believers would be without hope

If Christ remained dead in a grave, what hope of eternal life would we have?

But since Christ rose from His grave and Jesus was resurrected and now lives, we have hope that we in Christ shall all be made alive.

Now if Christ be preached that he rose from the dead, how say some among you that there is no resurrection of the dead? But if there be no resurrection of the dead, then is Christ not risen: And if Christ be not risen, then is our preaching vain, and your faith is also vain. Yea, and we are found false witnesses of God; because we have testified of God that he raised up Christ: whom he raised not up, if so be that the dead rise not. For if the dead rise not, then is not Christ raised: And if Christ be not raised, your faith is vain; ye are yet in your sins. Then they also which are fallen asleep in Christ are perished. If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men most miserable. But now is Christ risen from the dead, and become the firstfruits of them that slept. For since by man came death, by man came also the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive. But every man in his own order: Christ the firstfruits; afterward they that are Christ's at his coming. 1 Corinthians 15:12-23

These scriptures say that we, as believers in Jesus, have hope because of His resurrection, we too will be resurrected, either living or dead, whichever state we are in, when Christ returns.

The scriptures reminds us not to have hope in only Christ, but in the resurrection of Christ, and without the resurrection of Christ we would be the most miserable of all mankind.

Where does Hope come from?

Hope comes from the Lord

According to my earnest expectation and my hope, that in nothing I shall be ashamed, but that with all boldness, as always, so now also Christ shall be magnified in my body, whether it be by life, or by death. Philippians 1:20

What should believers do with their Hope?

Rejoice in Hope

Rejoicing in hope; patient in tribulation; continuing instant in prayer; Romans 12:12

Hold firm onto our Hope until the end

Wherefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and hope to the end for the grace that is to be brought unto you at the revelation of Jesus Christ; 1 Peter 1:13

Purify yourself

As Christ is pure, so should everyone that has this hope purifieth himself.

Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not.  Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.  And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure. 1 John 3:3

Since we are children of God and since we do have the hope of eternal life, we should not live like the world in sin Believers should live godly and pure lives.

As believers we are examples of Christ and should be examples of Christ in all the ways that we live, so that unbelievers will want what we have and want to know our reason of hope, which is Jesus Christ.

How long will there be hope for unbelievers?

Hope for salvation exists for as long as you have air in your lungs.  There is no hope for the lost after death.

As long as you are breathing there is hope

For to him that is joined to all the living there is hope: for a living dog is better than a dead lion Ecclesiastes 9:4

There are not any guarantees on life.  You could die any minute.  People everywhere in the world die every second.  No one is promised a tomorrow.  Age, race, financial status, nothing can keep anyone from death.

Death does not have to be your destination, there is hope in Jesus Christ for eternal life.

If you die without a personal relationship with Jesus Christ there is no hope for you.

There is no hope after death

For the grave cannot praise thee, death can not celebrate thee: they that go down into the pit cannot hope for thy truth. Isaiah 38:18

Believers have hope in Christ, don't be like unbelievers that have no hope.

Chasten children while there is hope

Chasten thy son while there is hope, and let not thy soul spare for his crying. Proverbs 19:18

What is the reason of your Hope?

But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear: 1 Peter 3:15

The word of God reads we, as believers, are always to be ready to give an answer to anyone who asks us a reason of the hope that is in us.

We can do this by keeping the Lord God in our hearts always.

What is the reason of my Hope?  Jesus Christ is the reason of my hope, the Son of God, my personal Lord and Saviour, knowing that by believing in Him I will receive eternal life, He forgave my sins and washed me clean so that I will inherit the kingdom of God.

The word of God reads we should have the plan of salvation ready when asked, "What is your reason for hope?".
