My spirit

This is a Bible study on my spirit.    Click here for a printable Bible Study Guide.

Yea, in the way of thy judgments, O LORD, have we waited for thee; the desire of our soul is to thy name, and to the remembrance of thee.  With my soul have I desired thee in the night; yea, with my spirit within me will I seek thee early: for when thy judgments are in the earth, the inhabitants of the world will learn righteousness. Isaiah 26:8-9

There is a spirit in man (Job 32:8).

What is my spirit?

My spirit is the non-material life component of my human being.  Your spirit is the non-material life component of your human being.

Our spirit is the non-material life component of our human being.  The spirit is the non-material life component of a human being.

The spirit is NOT our body, because a spirit does NOT have flesh and bones (Luke 24:39).  Our body is flesh and bones.

The word "spirit" is translated as "breath" and "wind".   Our spirit is the breath of life given to us by God when we are created.

The spirit of God hath made me, and the breath of the Almighty hath given me life. Job 33:4

The Spirit of God made us, and the breath of Almighty God gave us life.  God gives us our spirit by His Spirit when He breathes life into our bodies.

And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul. Genesis 2:7

God is a Spirit.  God communicates to us by His Spirit directly to our spirit.

God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth. John 4:24

Our spirit holds our spiritual capacity and conscience, through which we have direct contact with the Spirit of God.

The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God: Romans 8:16

Our spirit hears the Spirit of God calling us to Him, to receive His salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.

What is the difference between my spirit and my body?

Our bodies are flesh, bones, blood, and water.  Our spirit does NOT have flesh and bones (Luke 24:39).

Behold my hands and my feet, that it is I myself: handle me, and see; for a spirit hath not flesh and bones, as ye see me have. Luke 24:39

The spirit is the non-material life component of a human being, which holds our spiritual capacity and conscience, through which we have direct contact with God's Spirit.

Our bodies are created our spirit is given to us from God.

For more information see - BODY

What is the difference between my spirit and my soul?

Our spirit is received into our bodies by the breath of God, breathed into our nostrils.

When our spirit joins our body, we become a living soul.

And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul. Genesis 2:7

Our spirit receives information from the Spirit of God, and our soul holds and keeps that information.

God distinguishes our spirit from our soul in Scripture.  They are separate but one.

For more information see - SOUL

When do we receive our spirit?

The breath of life

We receive our spirit from God given to us when God breathes the breath of life into our nostrils (Genesis 2:7; 7:22; Job 27:3).

The word spirit means breath.

The spirit is life not the body.  Our body is not life.

Our life does not begin until God breathes life into us, the breath of life, which is the spirit of life, by the Spirit of God.

Our spirit is not created but given, given to us by God Himself, when He breathes life into our bodies.

Our spirit is from the Spirit of God.

Who created my spirit?

God is the Creator of all things, including our body, our spirit, and our soul.

The LORD God created our spirit and formed it within us, when God created us.

The burden of the word of the LORD for Israel, saith the LORD, which stretcheth forth the heavens, and layeth the foundation of the earth, and formeth the spirit of man within him. Zechariah 12:1

The spirit of God hath made me, and the breath of the Almighty hath given me life. Job 33:4

Does every human being have a spirit?

Yes, every human being has a spirit.  We are given our spirit by God when He breathes life into our nostrils.

And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul. Genesis 2:7

The breath of life is our spirit.

Every human being is given a spirit by God.

Our spirit originates by the breath of God, breathed into our nostrils at the beginning of our life.

Who owns my spirit?

Our spirit is God's.  Our spirit belongs to God alone.  God alone owns everything.  We do not own our spirit.

For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's. 1 Corinthians 6:20

We own nothing in this world.  We brought nothing into this world when we were born and we take nothing out of this world when we die.

Our spirit is not our property, but our spirit is the Lord's.

There is only one Spirit of God.  We are given the spirit when God breathes life into us (Job 27:3).

Who has power over my spirit?

There is one all powerful God and there is no power but of God.

There is no man that hath power over the spirit to retain the spirit; neither hath he power in the day of death: and there is no discharge in that war; neither shall wickedness deliver those that are given to it. Ecclesiastes 8:8

To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven: A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted; I know that, whatsoever God doeth, it shall be for ever: nothing can be put to it, nor any thing taken from it: and God doeth it, that men should fear before him. Ecclesiastes 3:1-2, 14

Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God. Whosoever therefore resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God: and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation. Romans 13:1-2

And I heard as it were the voice of a great multitude, and as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of mighty thunderings, saying, Alleluia: for the Lord God omnipotent reigneth. Revelation 19:6

And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Matthew 28:18

But unto them which are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God. 1 Corinthians 1:24

Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that ye may abound in hope, through the power of the Holy Ghost. Romans 15:13

For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God. 1 Corinthians 1:18

Why were we given a spirit?

God gave us all a spirit so we could communicate with Him.

God is a Spirit, and we communicate with God, Spirit to spirit.

The Spirit of God reveals the things of God to our spirit, spirit to Spirit, because this is the plan of God.

The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God: Romans 8:16

What is the purpose of our spirit?

Knowledge

God says that we know what we know because of our spirit.

For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God. 1 Corinthians 2:11

Communication with God

The purpose of our spirit is to hear the Spirit of God, and to respond positively to His call to accept His invitation to salvation.

But when it pleased God, who separated me from my mother's womb, and called me by his grace, To reveal his Son in me, that I might preach him among the heathen; immediately I conferred not with flesh and blood: Galatians 1:15-16

To join with God's Spirit

The purpose of our spirit is to join God's Spirit, to be one spirit with the Lord.

But he that is joined unto the Lord is one spirit. 1 Corinthians 6:17

To glorify God

The purpose of all creation is to glorify God, and our spirit is no exception.

The purpose of our spirit is to glorify God.

For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's. 1 Corinthians 6:20

To see the truth of God and receive His salvation

God gave us a spirit to see the truth of God and receive His salvation, which is by faith in His Son, Christ Jesus.

We receive the salvation of God through faith in Christ Jesus.  We have access to God the Father through the Son, Christ Jesus.

We were given a spirit by God so that we could receive the truth of God and be reconciled to God for all eternity through faith in Christ Jesus.

And that he might reconcile both unto God in one body by the cross, having slain the enmity thereby: For through him we both have access by one Spirit unto the Father. Ephesians 2:16, 18

For God hath not appointed us to wrath, but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ, 1 Thessalonians 5:9

Is our spirit the same as the Spirit of God?

Our spirit is NOT the same as the Spirit of God.

God's Spirit is God (John 4:24; 1 John 5:7).  Our spirit can be of God, if we accept His gift of salvation through faith in Christ Jesus (Romans 8:9).

The Spirit of God is infinite, eternal, without beginning or end (Hebrews 9:14).

The Spirit of God is omnipresent, present everywhere, while our spirit is present with us alone.

The Spirit of God cannot turn away from God, the spirit of man can turn away from God.

The Spirit of God is our source of our life.  Our spirit does not give life.

The spirit of God hath made me, and the breath of the Almighty hath given me life. Job 33:4

The Spirit of God is the source of our spirit's rebirth and regeneration.  The Spirit of God renews our spirit.

Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost; Titus 3:5

The Spirit of God dwells in all God's children, our spirit dwells in us alone (Romans 8:9).

The Spirit of God reveals the things of God to His children (1 Corinthians 2:11), our spirit knows nothing alone.

We are dependent on the Spirit of God, the Spirit of God is dependent on no one.

We can know the Spirit of God through faith in Christ Jesus to salvation, while the Spirit of God already knows all things.

What is the relationship between the Spirit of God and my spirit?

Communication

The relationship between the Spirit of God and my spirit is communication, revealed Spirit to spirit.

Our spirit holds our spiritual capacity and conscience, through which we have direct contact with the Spirit of God.

Our body is carnal, flesh and bones, and not spiritual (Romans 8:6).  Our body, the natural man, does not have the capacity to communicate with God (1 Corinthians 2:14).

God is a Spirit (John 4:24).  In order to communicate with God we must have a spirit.  We communicate with God spiritually, Spirit to spirit.

My spirit is the non-material part of my being, my existence.   My body is the material part of my being.  My flesh, bones, blood and water that make up my body are all visual, physical, material, they can be seen and touched.

My spirit is non-material because it cannot be seen physically, cannot be touched by human hand, is not physical.

My spirit is the non-material part of my being that allows me to communicate with the Spirit of God.

My spirit is necessary to communicate with the Spirit of God.  The Spirit of God knows the things of God.

We are all given a spirit when we are born, along with our body.  The union of our body and spirit make up our soul (Genesis 2:7).

Revelation

The Spirit of God reveals the things of God to my spirit.

But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God.  For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God. 1 Corinthians 2:10-11

The Spirit of God reveals the deep things of God, the truth of God to us about His salvation through our spirit.

Through spiritual communication between God's Spirit and my spirit, I can accept and receive the salvation of God, through faith in His Son, Christ Jesus.

Knowledge of truth to salvation

My spirit is given to me by God, so that I might respond to His Spirit, which is the Spirit of God.

By receiving the gift of God, which is the salvation of my soul, the Spirit of God itself bears witness with my spirit that I am a child of God.

The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God: Romans 8:16

But we are bound to give thanks alway to God for you, brethren beloved of the Lord, because God hath from the beginning chosen you to salvation through sanctification of the Spirit and belief of the truth:  Whereunto he called you by our gospel, to the obtaining of the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ. 2 Thessalonians 2:13-14

What is the role of the Spirit of God?

The Spirit of God guides our spirit to the truth of God.

Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.  He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you. John 16:13-14

The Spirit of God knows, searches, teaches, gives, reveals, guides, and comforts my spirit.

But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God.

For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God.

Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God.

Which things also we speak, not in the words which man's wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual. 1 Corinthians 2:10-13

How do we access the Spirit of God?

Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;  Which he shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Saviour;  That being justified by his grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life. Titus 3:5-7

Access to the Spirit of God is through Jesus Christ.

There is only one way to receive access to the Spirit of God, and that is by faith in Jesus Christ to salvation.

Does every human being receive the Spirit of God?

Every human being does NOT receive the Spirit of God.

Receiving the Spirit of God is a choice, a decision each person must make themselves (1 Corinthians 2:12).

The Spirit of God is not given to us automatically, we must ask God for it, we must accept it and receive the Spirit of God through faith to salvation.

For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. Romans 10:13

The Spirit of God is not received by the lost of this world because they refuse to see Him.

Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you. John 14:17

Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God. 1 Corinthians 2:14

The god of this world, satan, has blinded their eyes to the truth of God.

By the grace of God through faith in Christ Jesus and through repentance, which is turning away from satan and turning to God (Acts 26:18), can the lost see the truth of God, revealed to them by the Spirit of God, and receive forgiveness of their sins, be washed in the blood of Jesus, sanctified, regenerated, renewed, and reconciled to God the Father, and receive eternal life.

For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Ephesians 2:8

For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. Romans 6:23

How do we receive the Spirit of God?

Through the salvation of our souls, we receive the Spirit of God (Acts 2:38).

The Spirit of God dwells in believers through faith in Christ Jesus to salvation.  (John 1:12-13)

We receive the Spirit of God through faith in Christ Jesus.  Only by receiving the Spirit of Christ through salvation by faith can we be in the Spirit of God.

But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.  And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness.  But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you.  Therefore, brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live after the flesh.  For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live.  For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.  For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.  The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God: Romans 8:9-16

Christ Jesus dwells in our hearts by faith (Ephesians 3:17).

How do we know the Spirit of God dwells in us?

The Spirit of God manifests itself through the children of God.

If the Spirit of God dwells inside of you, it will pour out, be seen by all around you.

Those with the Spirit of God walk in the Spirit

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,  Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.  And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.  If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.  Let us not be desirous of vain glory, provoking one another, envying one another. Galatians 5:22

Does my spirit die when I die?

When we die on earth, our bodies die, our flesh and bones body dies, but NOT our spirit.  Our bodies are mortal, our spirits are eternal.

When our bodies die, the word of God reads that our spirit separates from our bodies, our spirit leaves our earthly bodies.

Now he that hath wrought us for the selfsame thing is God, who also hath given unto us the earnest of the Spirit.  Therefore we are always confident, knowing that, whilst we are at home in the body, we are absent from the Lord: (For we walk by faith, not by sight:)  We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord. 2 Corinthians 5:5-8

Through faith in Christ Jesus to salvation, when we die our spirit separates from our earthly body and is present with the Lord.  The believer's spirit returns to the Creator, to ever be with the Lord.

Where does my spirit go when I die?

When we die on earth, our bodies die, but our spirit goes to back to God.

If we are saved through faith in Christ Jesus, our spirit goes to be forever with the Lord.

We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord. 2 Corinthians 5:8

How do some spirits become evil?

If our spirit comes from God's Spirit, how does it become evil?

I call heaven and earth to record this day against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life, that both thou and thy seed may live: Deuteronomy 30:19

God gives us all a choice of life or death.  And to all who are confused which to choose, He says choose life.

God says that there is a path to life and a path to death.  The path to God is strait and narrow, and the path to death is wide and broad (Matthew 7:13-14).

The salvation of God is a choice.  Some people choose to receive the salvation of God through faith in His Son, and some people choose their own path.

For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.  And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever. 1 John 2:16-17

We choose to receive the spirit of the world, or the spirit of God (1 Corinthians 2:12).

We either have the Spirit of God dwelling in us through faith in Christ Jesus, or we don't, it is really that simple.

The pathway to God is a choice.  God does not force anyone take His free gift of salvation, it is our choice.

Many people think that the Spirit of God is foolishness, and refuse to see the truth of God.

But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned. 1 Corinthians 2:14

There are many people who choose their own path, who choose to separate themselves from God, these people choose NOT to have the Spirit of God.

But, beloved, remember ye the words which were spoken before of the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ;  How that they told you there should be mockers in the last time, who should walk after their own ungodly lusts.  These be they who separate themselves, sensual, having not the Spirit. Jude 1:17-19

All unrighteousness is sin.  Sin separates anyone from God.  Pursuing sin, living in sin, serving sin separates anyone from God.  Sin manifests more sin.

Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness,  Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies,  Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God. Galatians 5:19-21

Ah sinful nation, a people laden with iniquity, a seed of evildoers, children that are corrupters: they have forsaken the LORD, they have provoked the Holy One of Israel unto anger, they are gone away backward. Isaiah 1:4

And the destruction of the transgressors and of the sinners shall be together, and they that forsake the LORD shall be consumed. Isaiah 1:28

Thine own wickedness shall correct thee, and thy backslidings shall reprove thee: know therefore and see that it is an evil thing and bitter, that thou hast forsaken the LORD thy God, and that my fear is not in thee, saith the Lord GOD of hosts. Jeremiah 2:19

But chiefly them that walk after the flesh in the lust of uncleanness, and despise government.  Presumptuous are they, selfwilled, they are not afraid to speak evil of dignities.  Whereas angels, which are greater in power and might, bring not railing accusation against them before the Lord.  But these, as natural brute beasts, made to be taken and destroyed, speak evil of the things that they understand not; and shall utterly perish in their own corruption;  And shall receive the reward of unrighteousness, as they that count it pleasure to riot in the day time. Spots they are and blemishes, sporting themselves with their own deceivings while they feast with you;  Having eyes full of adultery, and that cannot cease from sin; beguiling unstable souls: an heart they have exercised with covetous practices; cursed children:  Which have forsaken the right way, and are gone astray, following the way of Balaam the son of Bosor, who loved the wages of unrighteousness; 2 Peter 2:10-15

Is there hope for a wicked spirit?

Yes, God says there is hope if you turn from your wickedness.  If we confess our sins and forsake sin, turn from our wickedness to God, God promises that He will forgive our sins and we can be saved.

But if the wicked turn from his wickedness, and do that which is lawful and right, he shall live thereby. Ezekiel 33:19

He that covereth his sins shall not prosper: but whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy. Proverbs 28:13

Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto the LORD, and he will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon. Isaiah 55:7

The wages of sin is death (Romans 6:23).  God does not want anyone to perish, but wants all sinners to come to repentance.

The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. 2 Peter 3:9

We are saved by grace through faith (Ephesians 2:8).  If we have faith that Jesus can save us from sin and death, we are saved, it is that simple.

Heal me, O LORD, and I shall be healed; save me, and I shall be saved: for thou art my praise. Jeremiah 17:14

For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. Romans 10:13

But we believe that through the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ we shall be saved, even as they. Acts 15:11

For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus. Galatians 3:26
