And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. Revelation 21:2

What is the New Jerusalem?

The dictionary defines the New Jerusalem as the final abode of souls redeemed by Christ.

The word of God defines the New Jerusalem as "the name of the city of God", "the Holy city, coming down from God out of Heaven".

Him that overcometh will I make a pillar in the temple of my God, and he shall go no more out: and I will write upon him the name of my God, and the name of the city of my God, which is new Jerusalem, which cometh down out of heaven from my God: and I will write upon him my new name. Revelation 3:12

And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. Revelation 21:2

And he carried me away in the spirit to a great and high mountain, and shewed me that great city, the holy Jerusalem, descending out of heaven from God, Revelation 21:10

The New Jerusalem is the Holy City of God prepared for all the children of God eternity.

The New Jerusalem is the Jerusalem that is with God today, the Holy city that has always been with God.

God has always lived in His city of Jerusalem in His Heaven.  God gave mankind an earthly Jerusalem, which we know as the capital city of Israel, to prepare mankind for His city to come. The Jerusalem that we know of, here on this planet, is NOT the Jerusalem of God, because the Jerusalem of God is with Him in Heaven.

But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him. 1 Corinthians 2:9

The New Jerusalem is the continuing city, the Holy City of God that will never end, that is NOT here on this earth now, but will one day come down from Heaven with God (Hebrews 13:14), on a new earth that will be created by God.

Why do we need a New Jerusalem?

There are several reasons why God sends a New Jerusalem city down from out of Heaven.

The earth and the Jerusalem we know of will be destroyed

Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away. Matthew 24:35

Heaven and earth shall pass away (Mark 13:31; Luke 21:33).  The earth, this planet and all other planets in the heavens, will be destroyed one day by God (2 Peter 3:7, 10, 12).

God promised that after He destroyed this earth we live in now, that He will create a new heavens and a new earth (2 Peter 3:13).

And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea. Revelation 21:1

With the old Jerusalem destroyed with the old earth, God will build a New Jerusalem and a new earth, to fulfill His Word.

Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness. 2 Peter 3:13

The earth, including the old Jerusalem, and all that is in it and on it, will be destroyed by God to wipe out all effects of sin forever.

To fulfill Scripture

God promises to fulfill ALL of His Holy Word (Matthew 5:11).

God promises in His Holy Word, that after this earth was destroyed and after He created a new earth, that He would send down from Heaven a New Jerusalem (Revelation 21:2).

To establish Christ's eternal throne

And the city had no need of the sun, neither of the moon, to shine in it: for the glory of God did lighten it, and the Lamb is the light thereof. Revelation 21:23

To bring Glory to God

Everything is to bring Glory to God.  All things are done to Glorify God.  The new Holy city, the New Jerusalem glorifies God, because it will have the Glory of God Himself.

And he carried me away in the spirit to a great and high mountain, and shewed me that great city, the holy Jerusalem, descending out of heaven from God, Having the glory of God: and her light was like unto a stone most precious, even like a jasper stone, clear as crystal; Revelation 21:10-11

God desires to give His children all things

God has always wanted to give His saints everything that He has, giving to us has always been the desire of God (Romans 8:32).  God wants to give us His most precious Holy City as our own, just as He gave to us His most precious Son.

But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him. 1 Corinthians 2:9

By the grace of God through faith in Christ Jesus, we become co-heirs with Christ, to inherit all things of God (Romans 8:16-17).  This inheritance includes God's Holy precious city of Jerusalem, created just for us and reserved for us in Heaven, to be brought down to us, and placed on the new earth that God will create for us (1 Peter 1:4).

Knowing that he which raised up the Lord Jesus shall raise up us also by Jesus, and shall present us with you.  For all things are for your sakes, that the abundant grace might through the thanksgiving of many redound to the glory of God. 2 Corinthians 4:15-16

Ephesians 3:11-21

How will the New Jerusalem appear?

The new Holy city of God, which is the New Jerusalem, will come down out of Heaven from God.

Where is the location of the New Jerusalem?

The New Jerusalem is NOT here now on this planet.  Believers of God seek the New Jerusalem to come

The continuing city, the New Jerusalem will be established one day by God Himself, as His home with all His saints, with all His children, were we will live with God, our Lord and Saviour forevermore.

For here have we no continuing city, but we seek one to come. Hebrews 13:14

Our Blessed Lord God has so graciously given us a taste, a glimpse of His continuing city, His Jerusalem, our New Jerusalem, our future world, our permanent residence, our future and final home, our beautiful city of God, through His Word, the good Word of God, and the powers of the world to come (Hebrews 6:5; Philippians 3:20).

And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea.  And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God. And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away. Revelation 21:2-4

The location of the New Jerusalem will be on the new earth created by God, the world to come.

For, behold, I create new heavens and a new earth: and the former shall not be remembered, nor come into mind. Isaiah 65:17

All believers in Christ Jesus, will be with the Lord forever and ever, never to be separated from our God ever again, for any reason.

God Himself will be with all the saints, we will be His people, and He will be our God (Revelation 21:3).

All former things will be passed away, there will be no more death, no sorrow, no crying, no pain, and God will wipe away all the tears from our eyes (Revelation 21:4).

Who will enter the New Jerusalem?

All people who overcome the world and whose names are written in the Lamb's book of life will enter the New Jerusalem.

He that overcometh shall inherit all things; and I will be his God, and he shall be my son. Revelation 21:7

And there shall in no wise enter into it any thing that defileth, neither whatsoever worketh abomination, or maketh a lie: but they which are written in the Lamb's book of life. Revelation 21:27

Who are the people who overcome?  The children of God who by faith in Christ Jesus, overcome the world and believe that Jesus is the Son of God.  (Galatians 3:26; 1 John 5:5).

Who will NOT enter the New Jerusalem?

The unbelieving will NOT enter the New Jerusalem.  All people who do NOT believe in Jesus Christ to salvation will not enter the New Jerusalem.

Unbelief separates anyone from God, no exceptions.

But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death. Revelation 21:8

For without are dogs, and sorcerers, and whoremongers, and murderers, and idolaters, and whosoever loveth and maketh a lie. Revelation 22:15

All people who add to and/or take away from the Word of God, the Holy Scriptures, will NOT enter the New Jerusalem, will NOT inherit the things of God, will NOT receive everlasting life in the Kingdom of God.

For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book:  And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book. Revelation 22:18-19

Who will live in the New Jerusalem?

All the saints of God, who are the children of God, who are the believers of Christ Jesus to salvation.

Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city. Revelation 22:14

He that overcometh shall inherit all things; and I will be his God, and he shall be my son. Revelation 21:7

What will the New Jerusalem look like?

And he carried me away in the spirit to a great and high mountain, and shewed me that great city, the holy Jerusalem, descending out of heaven from God, Having the glory of God: and her light was like unto a stone most precious, even like a jasper stone, clear as crystal; And had a wall great and high, and had twelve gates, and at the gates twelve angels, and names written thereon, which are the names of the twelve tribes of the children of Israel: On the east three gates; on the north three gates; on the south three gates; and on the west three gates. And the wall of the city had twelve foundations, and in them the names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb. And he that talked with me had a golden reed to measure the city, and the gates thereof, and the wall thereof. And the city lieth foursquare, and the length is as large as the breadth: and he measured the city with the reed, twelve thousand furlongs. The length and the breadth and the height of it are equal. And he measured the wall thereof, an hundred and forty and four cubits, according to the measure of a man, that is, of the angel. And the building of the wall of it was of jasper: and the city was pure gold, like unto clear glass. And the foundations of the wall of the city were garnished with all manner of precious stones. The first foundation was jasper; the second, sapphire; the third, a chalcedony; the fourth, an emerald; The fifth, sardonyx; the sixth, sardius; the seventh, chrysolyte; the eighth, beryl; the ninth, a topaz; the tenth, a chrysoprasus; the eleventh, a jacinth; the twelfth, an amethyst. And the twelve gates were twelve pearls: every several gate was of one pearl: and the street of the city was pure gold, as it were transparent glass. And I saw no temple therein: for the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are the temple of it. Revelation 21:10-22

The New Jerusalem is made of pure gold, like clear glass, walls of precious stones, gates of pearls, and filled with the Glory of God.

We have never seen anything like this in our history.

Is the New Jerusalem Heaven?

And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.  And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God. Revelation 21:2-3

The New Jerusalem is the Holy city, which comes down from God out of Heaven, so we know the New Jerusalem is not Heaven.

How long will we live in the New Jerusalem?

The New Jerusalem is the believers of Christ's final address, the children of God's final estate, our final home - "and they shall reign fore ever and ever" (Revelation 22:5).

When will the New Jerusalem appear?

After all other scripture is fulfilled, concerning the last days, after - the Rapture of the Church, the Judgment Seat of Christ, the Tribulation, the Second Coming of Christ, the 1,000 year reign of Christ on earth, the final battle of Good and Evil, the Great White Throne Judgment, the false prophet, the antichrist, the devil, the fallen angels, and all unbelievers, are cast alive into the lake of fire and brimstone and shall be tormented day and night fore ever and ever (Revelation 20:10).

After all of God's enemies are put into the lake of fire, God will destroy the present earth.  The new Jerusalem will appear after our current heaven and earth are destroyed by the word of God.

The new Jerusalem will appear after God creates a new heaven and a new earth.

The new Jerusalem will fulfill all things.

In God's word we are told that "these things must shortly be done" (Revelation 22:6), "the time is at hand" (22:10), the time is now for God's word to be fulfilled.

And, behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last Revelation 22:12-13

Everything is ready for Christ to come.

He which testifieth these things saith, Surely I come quickly. Amen. Even so, come, Lord Jesus. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. Amen. Revelation 22:20-21
