    Biblical Truth about Idols and Idolatry

  1. God is against all idols and idolatry.    Idolatry is sin against God.  Idolaters are without God.  Idols and idolatry are an abomination to God.  No idol, graven image, is of God, no matter who it is of, or who it looks like.  God is not in any idol.  Do NOT be deceived, God has nothing to do with any idols, with any graven images.  God is NOT with the people who use idols.  God does NOT approve, condone, or allow the use of any idols, any graven images, for any reason, NO exceptions.  No one can be blessed of God by using idols.  Users of graven images do NOT worship God. (1 Corinthians 10:21; Exodus 20:3-5; Leviticus 19:4, 26:1; 2 Kings 17:12; Ezekiel 14:6; Acts 17:16-30; Galatians 5:19-20; Revelation 22:14-15).  Using idols is rejecting God, and all people who reject God will face destruction and will perish, die without God, and be eternally separated from God (Isaiah 1:28; Ephesians 5:6-7).
  2. Use of idols is against God, because God is against idols and idolatry, in any form.  People who use idols in any way are against God, no exceptionsUse of idols is NOT the will of God.  We are either for God or we are against God (Matthew 12:30).  The children of disobedience use idols and graven images.  When people do that which is against God and His teachings, they stand against God, they become the enemy of God, haters of God, by their actions.  God says those who love Him keep His commandments, and those who love God do NOT use idols or graven images. Do NOT be deceived, no one can use idols and be of God, no exceptions. (2 John 1:9-11; Matthew 12:30; Romans 1:32; Mark 3:24-25; Mark 9:40; Colossians 3:5-6; John 14:15, 23; 1 Corinthians 10:21; James 4:4; 1 John 1:6; Titus 1:16)
  3. God says we are NOT to use idols (graven images) in any way, we are NOT to make, put up, worship, buy, sell, give, desire, receive, bow down to, have, own, set up, take part of idols (graven images) in any way, in any form. (Exodus 20:4-5; Leviticus 26:1; 2 Kings 17:12).  Idols are manmade, NOT God made (Isaiah 2:8).  We are to touch not, taste not or handle not, anything that is not of God (Colossians 2:20-22).  And remember, it does hurt you to look, because the Word of God states that, willingly viewing sin is sin, just as if you had done the sin yourself (2 John 1:9-11; Ephesians 5:6-7, 11; 1 Timothy 5:22).
  4. The children of God do NOT use idols in any way. We are to keep ourselves away from idols.  We are either with God or without God. Through the power of God in us we can resist idolatry.  (1 John 5:21; 2 Corinthians 6:16-18, 10:5; Acts 15:20, 17:29-30; 1 Corinthians 10:14-15, 21; Colossians 3:5; Luke 9:50, 11:23)
  5. Idols are any (and all) graven images, a similitude of any figure, male or female, human or not, alive or dead, real or fiction, any thing on earth, in the sea, in heaven above, or anywhere real or imagined. (Exodus 20:4; Deuteronomy 4:16-10, 23, 5:8)
  6. All idols are strange godsThere is only One True Living Lord Jehovah God Almighty and all other gods are false idols.  We are not to have any other god or gods.  God forbade any graven images of Himself.  (Exodus 20:3-5; 1 Chronicles 16:25-17; Psalm 96:5; Acts 17:29-30)
  7. Idolatry separates anyone from God.  Using idols is idolatry and leads men away from God.  Placing anything above God is idolatry.  (Ezekiel 14:5, 7; Galatians 5:19-21; Hebrews 3:12).  Idolatry is not necessarily images, but can be anything we place over God in our hearts.  God will utterly abolish all idols and all people attached to idols in any way (Isaiah 2:18).
  8. Idols can be formed in our minds and in our hearts, and placed on inanimate objects, like our careers, success, great riches, fame, and placed on animate objects like cars, houses, people, hobbies.  Anything that takes the place of God in your heart is idolatry.  (Ezekiel 14:3-4, 14:7; Colossians 3:5-6)
  9. Idolatry is the act of using idols.  An idolater is any person who uses idols in anywayIdolatry is sin against God.  (Leviticus 26:1; 1 John 5:17-18).  Knowing to do good and not doing it is sin.  Knowing the truth of God NOT to use idols, or practice idolatry, but doing it anyway is sin. (James 4:17; 2 Kings 17:12; Luke 6:49)
  10. Prayers through idols are NOT heard by God.  Prayers to or through idols (graven images) are NOT heard by God.  Do NOT be deceived, the prayers of the person using idols are NOT to God and are NOT heard by God (1 Peter 3:12).  The prayers that God hear are to Him alone, not through something or through someone.
  11. God says idols are nothing.  Idols aren't alive, the cannot speak, they cannot hear, they cannot see, they cannot walk, the cannot touch, they cannot comfort, they cannot bring peace, they cannot love or give love, they cannot save, they cannot forgive, they are nothing.  The people who use idols are like their idols, nothing (Psalm 115:4-11; Zechariah 10:2).
  12. Idolatry is practicing unbelief.  No one can have faith in God and use idols.  Idolatry, using idols, is turning away from God, is unbelief in God and belief in idols.  If we trust God and believe in God, then we will turn away from all forms of idolatry.  Faith in God is believing in all that He says it truth, including NO idols.  Unbelief separates anyone from God.  Do NOT be deceived, the Word of God reads that no one who uses idols, who practices idolatry, has the salvation of God (Daniel 5:23; Leviticus 19:4, 26:30; Ezekiel 14:7; Galatians 5:19-21; 1 Corinthians 6:9-10, 10:21; Revelation 21:8, 22:14; 3 John 1:11; Titus 1:15-16; Hebrews 3:12; 11:6)
  13. God can forgive idolatry.  Forgiveness of idolatry is given to all people who ask for God's forgiveness and who turn to God from idols and serve God.  Repentance is before forgiveness, you must reject idolatry, turn from using idols to receive forgiveness for idolatry.  The end of all unrepentant sin is death.  God promises to forgive the sin of all people who ask Him for it with true repentance in their hearts. (1 Thessalonians 1:9; Acts 14:15; Ezekiel 14:6; Romans 6:23; 2 Corinthians 7:9-10; 1 John 1:9; Psalm 103:12; James 4:7-8).
  14. The children of God have nothing to do with idols or idolatryNeither shalt thou bring an abomination into thine house, lest thou be a cursed thing like it: but thou shalt utterly detest it, and thou shalt utterly abhor it; for it is a cursed thing. Deuteronomy 7:26.  The children of God who will inherit the Kingdom of God have nothing to do with idols or idolatry, no idolatrous person will enter into God's Kingdom.

 


What is a graven image?

 

Lest ye corrupt yourselves, and make you a graven image, the similitude of any figure, the likeness of male or female,  The likeness of any beast that is on the earth, the likeness of any winged fowl that flieth in the air,  The likeness of any thing that creepeth on the ground, the likeness of any fish that is in the waters beneath the earth: Deuteronomy 4:16-18

God defines a graven image as the similitude of any figure.  The similitude of any figure includes images of any man, male or female, likeness of anyone, likeness of any creature, or any creation of God.

God created all things.  We are NOT to make any graven image of anything God created, out of wood, rock, stone, or any materials.

Why are we not to make graven images of anything or anyone?  God said not to make graven images and God said using idols is idolatry.

And lest thou lift up thine eyes unto heaven, and when thou seest the sun, and the moon, and the stars, even all the host of heaven, shouldest be driven to worship them, and serve them, which the LORD thy God hath divided unto all nations under the whole heaven. Deuteronomy 4:19

Take heed unto yourselves, lest ye forget the covenant of the LORD your God, which he made with you, and make you a graven image, or the likeness of any thing, which the LORD thy God hath forbidden thee. Deuteronomy 4:23

 


What is an idol?

The dictionary defines:

  • An idol is a representation or symbol of an object of worship
  • An idol is a false god.
  • An idol is a likeness of something. 
  • An idol is a form or appearance visible but without substance. 
  • An idol is a false conception.

So, what is an idol?  An idol is statue, or image of some one, or image of something, which is nothing, false and without substance.

Turn ye not unto idols, nor make to yourselves molten gods: I am the LORD your God. Leviticus 19:4

Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth: Exodus 20:4

A statue, a graven image, a representation of some person or something is an idol.  Anything can be an idol. 

An idol is not necessarily a person or an object representing a person, like a statue or image of someone or something.  An idol can also be something that we cannot see, idols of our heart, anything that we place before God.  (Coveting things is idolatry).

An idol is anything that exalts itself against God.

Anything can be an idol, a person, a statue, a thing, something real or imaginary can be an idol. 

An idol can be anything that is:

  • Placed above God
  • In place of God
  • Esteemed higher than God
  • Esteemed the same as God
  • Placed as equal to God
  • Replaces God
  • Placed with God
  • Placed as God
  • Worshipped besides God or with God
  • Served besides God or with God
  • Honored besides God or with God

 


What does God say about idols?

God says:

  • We are not to create idols
    • Out of any material
    • Representing anything
    • Representing anyone 
  • We are not to own or have idols 
  • We are not to worship idols
    • Physically
    • In our hearts
  • We are not to serve idols
  • We are not to desire idols

 

Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth: Exodus 20:4

This scripture says it all, regarding idols. 

How much clearer can God be?  God says, do NOT make any image of anything.  And if that isn't clear enough, God continues and defines anything as 'including anything that is in heaven above, or earth beneath or in the water under the earth'.

God says, anything includes what is above us, what is on the earth and everything beneath the earth.  God didn't leave anything out. 

That includes the whole complete universe, the complete world as we know of it.  'Anything' means ALL THINGS.

Who could read this scripture and not understand?  Well, many do read it and make idols anyway.  Why? Because some people want to invent their own religion and own rules, away from what God wants or says.

God said it, that settles it for me!  God said NO idols period!

 

Do not bow down to idols or serve them.

Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me; Exodus 20:5

Many religions of this world bow down to an image.  God said we are NOT to make or have any images of any thing AND that we are NOT to bow down to them.  No images of God, saints, anyone or anything. 

Any image of anything or anyone lifts up yourself against the Lord of heaven.

Do NOT be deceived, all images of anyone worshipped, all idols are against the Lord of heaven.  God said praising idols, statues of silver, gold, brass, iron, wood, or stone, items that cannot see, cannot hear, cannot know anything or anyone, lifts up yourself against the Lord of Heaven.

But hast lifted up thyself against the Lord of heaven; and they have brought the vessels of his house before thee, and thou, and thy lords, thy wives, and thy concubines, have drunk wine in them; and thou hast praised the gods of silver, and gold, of brass, iron, wood, and stone, which see not, nor hear, nor know: and the God in whose hand thy breath is, and whose are all thy ways, hast thou not glorified: Daniel 5:23

God says that, no idol, no statue, no image of anything or anyone glorifies God.

God says, Why do you praise statues made by the hands of men, that cannot see, cannot hear, cannot know, made of silver, gold, brass, iron, wood or stone?  God is the one who by His hand gave us breath, gave us life, we are to glorify God alone, no idol, no statue, no one, and nothing else.

All must turn from using idols, all people must turn to God away from idols.

All people who have or use idols, do NOT serve God.  God says all idol worshippers do NOT serve Him.  If you make, own, worship, pray to, kiss, behold, or praise any image, any idol, you do NOT serve God.

God says no one can serve and worship Him, AND use idols.  All people must turn from idols to God.  No one can turn to God with idols, all people must turn FROM idols to serve the true living God.

For they themselves shew of us what manner of entering in we had unto you, and how ye turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God; 1 Thessalonians 1:9

We are to worship God in Spirit alone, NOT toward any statue.

We must avoid any image of any thing. 

No one worships God through any image.  God says that NO person worships Him through a statue or image.  Yes, many people say that they are worshipping God by praying toward some statue, BUT GOD says that they are NOT worshipping HIM.  So if they are NOT worshipping God, who are they worshipping?

If you are praying to an image of anyone or anything, God says that you are NOT worshiping God.

 

God expressly states that He is NOT IN any image

God is NOT IN anything made by the hands of men.  So if you have been told that God is represented in some image, or anything, you have been told a lie.

God has never and will never place Himself inside anything made or created by the hands of men or man's devices. 

If someone has told you that God is in a certain statue, or any object, they are telling you a lie.  DO NOT BELIEVE THE LIE.  Trust God, believe God, don't believe the lies of men.

Believe God, believe in the Word of God, have faith in God, not man.

Remember, NO person on this earth can save you, ONLY GOD SAVES.  We must trust in God alone, we must have faith in God alone, to be saved. 

We are saved by the grace of God, nothing else.

Do NOT be deceived, no one honors God in any way through any image worship. 

Make NO images of God.

God says in His Word that there are to be NO images of Himself, His Angels, His Host of Heaven, His Son, His family, His saints, anything or anyone in the Heavens above, the earth below, beneath the earth or in the sea.

Think about what God is telling us, God said NO images of anything in the Heavens above, the earth below, in and beneath the earth or sea, that covers ALL things ever created.

Why was God so explicit in His definition of idols?  Because He doesn't want any misunderstanding regarding His commandment, and He doesn't want us to sin against Him.

NO images are to be used in worship to God.  We are NOT to make, own or have any images of God.  We are NOT to desire images of God, or any other statues, idols.

You may have been taught that a certain image represents God, or that a certain image of someone honors God in some way, this is NOT what God says in His Holy Word. 

God considers all images of any thing idols. 

God tells us in His Holy Word that:

  • We are NOT to make idols
  • We are NOT have idols with us or in our home
  • We are NOT to own idols
  • We are NOT to desire idols
  • We are NOT to view the idols of other people
  • We are NOT to participate in traditions of idol worshippers.

What does God have against images of Himself?  Many people falsely believe that an idol, an image of God, makes God happy, or that it honors God in some way.

God knows what is best for His people.  He knows the creature that He created, man.  He knows that the spirit of man is willing, but man's flesh is weak

God knows our temptations and our limits.  God knows how easy it is for us to yield to temptation and sin against Him.

Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak. Matthew 26:41

God always has His children's best interest at heart.  God always, first and foremost, protects us against our enemies, which is often times ourselves.

Remember, God tempts NO man.  An idol, an image of any thing, tempts man, to worship the statue instead of the God Almighty, the one true God.

Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man:  But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed.  Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death.  Do not err, my beloved brethren. James 1:13-16

God says every man is tempted, when he is drawn away and enticed.  Temptation is not sin, but yielding to the temptation is sin against God.  And remember the end of sin is death and eternal separation from God.

God cannot be represented by something that is dead, like a statue made of stone. 

God says that NO image can see, NO image can hear, NO image can speak, NO image can forgive sins, NO image can help you, images are lifeless and dead. 

Their idols are silver and gold, the work of men's hands. They have mouths, but they speak not: eyes have they, but they see not: They have ears, but they hear not: noses have they, but they smell not: They have hands, but they handle not: feet have they, but they walk not: neither speak they through their throat. They that make them are like unto them; so is every one that trusteth in them. O Israel, trust thou in the LORD: he is their help and their shield. O house of Aaron, trust in the LORD: he is their help and their shield. Ye that fear the LORD, trust in the LORD: he is their help and their shield. Psalm 115:4-11

 

The God Almighty is alive, God is the living God.

And saying, Sirs, why do ye these things?   We also are men of like passions with you, and preach unto you that ye should turn from these vanities unto the living God, which made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and all things that are therein: Acts 14:15

We can only see God through faith.  Faith is the substance of things we cannot see, but of things hoped for, faith is the evidence of things not seen.  Faith is not seen with the eyes.

Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. Hebrews 11:1

God does NOT want us to see a statue of Him, to touch an image of Him, to have faith in Him only because we can see Him in some image.

God wants us to trust in Him who we cannot see, not in some image of Him.

God wants us to have faith in Him who we have NOT seen, this is why God does NOT want us to have idols, images of Him, or images of anything.  God does not want us to place our trust and faith in an inanimate object, God wants us to place our complete trust and faith in Him, who we have not seen.

Jesus saith unto him, Thomas, because thou hast seen me, thou hast believed: blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed. John 20:29

The called of God are His children, God's little children, and He asks that we keep ourselves away from idols.

Little children, keep yourselves from idols. Amen. 1 John 5:21

The children of God, who are the temple of God, have no agreement with idols.

And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. 2 Corinthians 6:17

As the children of God, we are not to think that the Godhead is like gold, silver or stone graven by are and man's devices.  God commands every one to repent from idol worship and all sins.

Forasmuch then as we are the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Godhead is like unto gold, or silver, or stone, graven by art and man's device. And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent: Acts 17:29-30

God does not want us to even think of Him in anyway related to a statue, an idol made out of gold, or silver, or stone, or made out of any material, that is graven by or made by man's devices.

God is not stone, not a statue that you can see and feel and touch.  God is greater than any statue, any idol. 

God is a Spirit and the true worshippers of God must worship Him in Spirit, not by looking at an idol.

God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth. John 4:24

 

Do not create an image of anything, not to worship any image.

Ye shall make you no idols nor graven image, neither rear you up a standing image, neither shall ye set up any image of stone in your land, to bow down unto it: for I am the LORD your God. Leviticus 26:1

God's scripture is very clear, we are NOT to make images of anything or anyone, and He specifically states in heaven above, this includes images of God, Jesus, angels, saints, anyone or anything. 

God specifically says not to make an image of anyone or anything and worship them.

Turn ye not unto idols, not make to yourselves molten gods: I am the LORD your God. Leviticus 19:4

Ye shall make no idols nor graven image neither rear you up a standing image, neither shall ye set up any image of stone in your land, to bow down unto it: for I am the LORD your God. Leviticus 26:1

And I will destroy your high places, and cut down your images, and cast your carcases upon the carcases of your idols, and my soul shall abhor you. Leviticus 26:30

And ye have seen their abominations, and their idols, wood and stone, silver and gold, which were among them:) Deuteronomy 29:17

For they served idols, whereof the LORD had said unto them, Ye shall not do this thing. 2 Kings 17:12

For great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised: he also is to be feared above all gods.  For all the gods of the people are idols: but the LORD made the heavens.  Glory and honour are in his presence; strength and gladness are in his place. 1 Chronicles 16:25-17

For all the gods of the nations are idols: but the LORD made the heavens. Psalm 96:5

Confounded be all they that serve graven images, that boast themselves of idols: worship him, all ye gods.  Zion heard, and was glad; and the daughters of Judah rejoiced because of they judgments, O LORD.   For thou, LORD, art high above all the earth: thou art exalted far above all gods. Psalm 97:7-9

 

There is nothing missing from the word of God; God left nothing out of His word.

Complete instructions for our lives are contained in the word of God, God's Holy words.

If God had wanted us to have statues of Him, or of Jesus, or of Jesus' relatives, or of the saints, or any statue, or idol, or image, then God would have given us specific instructions, and God would have instructed us exactly how to build them.

There is NOT one scripture in the Holy Word of God, instructing anyone to build any statue of God, or in the likeness of God.

There are scriptures in the word of God telling us NOT to make statues, NOT to own statues, NOT to possess them in any form.

God does state in scripture after scripture, that we NOT to create, make, build or have, or own any idols, statues, images of anything.

God tells us NOT to make, NOT to worship, NOT to have, NOT to own, NOT to possess in any way, and NOT to desire idols.

So why do we see so many images and statues, idols of God, Jesus, the saints, and Mary the earthly mother of Jesus?  It is not God's will to have any idols, but NOT all men have faith in God, not all men follow the will of God. 

Many lost people in this world serve other gods.  Lost people do not follow the commandments of God. 

The Holy Bible clearly states that we are NOT to create or have idols, NOT to have, worship, own, or even desire any graven image.

God says that idols are dead, and that He is the only true living God

God does NOT want to confuse people with dead idols. 

God is NOT the author of confusion, the devil is the author of lies and confusion.

 

Only God is the true living God.  Idols are dead.

Their idols are silver and gold, the work of men's hands.  They have mouths, but they speak not: eyes have they, but they see not:  They have ears, but they hear not: noses have thy, but they smell not:  They have hands, but they handle not: feet have they, but they walk not: neither speak they through their throat.  They that make them are like unto them; so is every one that trusteth in them.  O Israel, trust thou in the LORD: he is their help and their shield. Psalm 115:4-9

Idols made by the hands of men are made of silver and gold; they have mouths but they cannot speak; they have eyes but they cannot see, they have ears but they cannot hear; they have noses but they cannot smell; they have hands but the cannot touch; they have feet but they cannot walk; they never speak through their throatAll who make idols are just like their idols and so is everyone that trust in them.

God says that people who make idols and trust in them are just like them, are dead, nothing.

The idols of the heathen are silver and gold, the work of men's hands. Psalm 135:15

Their land also is full of idols; they worship the work of their own hands, that which their own fingers have made: Isaiah 2:8

What profiteth the graven image that the maker thereof hath graven it; the molten image, and a teacher of lies, that the maker of his work trusteth therein, to make dumb idols? Habakkuk 2:18

Ye shall make no idols nor graven image neither rear you up a standing image, neither shall ye set up any image of stone in your land, to bow down unto it: for I am the LORD your God. Leviticus 26:1

The Holy Word of God is the final word and there is no other rule for the lives of those genuinely saved in Christ. 

Nothing and no one supersedes the Word of God.  Nothing and no one has the authority to take away from or add to the Words of God.

God calls anyone a liar, who says that they have power to change His words in the Word of God.  God calls anyone a liar, who says that God Himself gave them power to change His word.

God says that not one tittle of His word will change until ALL His word is fulfilled.

For verily I say unto you,  Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled. Matthew 5:18

No one is above God.  No person's words are greater than God's words.  No person has more power or authority than God.  God alone has total power.

 


What does God say about idolatry?

 

Wherefore, my dearly beloved, flee from idolatry. 1 Corinthians 10:14

God tells us in His Holy word to flee from idolatry.  Run away from sin, flee from idolatry.

How can we avoid sin?  God promises us that if we submit ourselves to Him and resist the devil, that the devil will flee from us.

Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. James 4:7

Through the power of God, which is given freely to all His saints, we are able to flee from sin and the devil.

The devil has NO power over the children of God, believers of Christ Jesus, the saints, the called of God. 

Believers of God are kept by the power of God through faith, we are in the loving hands of the one true God Almighty.

Who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. 1 Peter 1:5

 


Are idols only statues?

An idol doesn't have to be something we see, an image of something, it can also be anything that we place before God, that is in our heart. 

An idol is anything that we place before and above God.

 

Idols of the heart

Idols of your heart separate you from God, just like statue idols.

Son of man, these men have set up their idols in their heart, and put the stumblingblock of their iniquity before their face: should I be inquired of at all by them? Ezekiel 14:3

Therefore speak unto them, and say unto them, Thus saith the Lord GOD: Every man of the house of Israel that setteth up his idols in his heart, and putteth the stumblingblock of his iniquity before his face, and cometh to the prophet: I the LORD will answer him that cometh according to the multitude of his idols; Ezekiel 14:4

For every one of the house of Israel, or of the stranger that sojourneth in Israel, which separateth himself from me, and setteth up his idols in his heart, and putteth the stumblingblock of his iniquity before his face, and cometh to a prophet to inquire of him concerning me; I the LORD will answer him by myself: Ezekiel 14:7

 

Idol worshippers are alienated from God

Idol worshippers are separated from God.  To be with God again, idol worshippers must repent and turn from idols.

That I may take the house of Israel in their own heart, because they are all estranged from me through their idols. Ezekiel 14:5

Therefore say unto the house of Israel, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Repent, and turn yourselves from your idols; and turn away your faces from all your abominations. Ezekiel 14:6

 

There is no comfort in idols

Comfort from God is NOT in any statue, because God is NOT inside of any statue.  There can be no comfort from a dead piece of rock.

True comfort only comes from the Comforter, our living God.

For the idols have spoken vanity, and the diviners have seen a lie, and have told false dreams; they comfort in vain: therefore they went their way as a flock, they were troubled, because there was no shepherd. Zechariah 10:2

 

Abstain from idols

We as believers in Christ are not to even be around idols, we are to stay away from the presence of idols, because God says they pollute and poison us.

But that we write unto them, that they abstain from the pollutions of idols, and from fornication, and from things strangled, and from blood. Acts 15:20

 

Believers have nothing to do with idols

True believers, the children of God, are the temple of God and do NOT have any agreement with idols.

And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. 2 Corinthians 6:16

 

Turn to God from idols

For they themselves shew of us what manner of entering in we had unto you, and how ye turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God; 1 Thessalonians 1:9

To serve the true living God, we must turn away from idols.

 

God said keep yourselves from idols.

Little children, keep yourselves from idols. Amen. 1 John 5:21

God said it - that settles it !!    Keep away from idols!!

 


What is idolatry?

Idolatry is the use of idols.  Idolatry is the worship of idols; the worship of a physical object as a god; immoderate attachment or devotion to something.

The works of the flesh are manifest, which includes idolatry, and they which do such things as idolatry will NOT inherit the Kingdom of God.

Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies,  Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God. Galatians 5:19-21

In addition to worshipping idols, idolatry is defined as covetousness.  Covetousness is to desire the things of others.

Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatryFor which things' sake the wrath of God cometh on the children of disobedience: Colossians 3:5-6

We are to mortify (put to death) idolatry, because the wrath of God will come on the children of disobedience, all who practice the sin of idolatry.

The children of disobedience practice idolatry and will receive the wrath of God, unless they repent by turning to God from idolatry.

No one can participate in idolatry and be a child of God.  The children of God do not participate in any form of idolatry.

Wherefore, my dearly beloved, flee from idolatry. 1 Corinthians 10:14

The apostle Paul witnessed a whole city given to idolatry.  He disputed in the synagogue with devout people, leaders and people in the market daily, philosophers, people who spent all their time learning about some new thing.  These were superstitious people who ignorantly worshipped unknown gods.

Now while Paul waited for them at Athens, his spirit was stirred in him, when he saw the city wholly given to idolatry. Therefore disputed he in the synagogue with the Jews, and with the devout persons, and in the market daily with them that met with him. Then certain philosophers of the Epicureans, and of the Stoicks, encountered him. And some said, What will this babbler say? other some, He seemeth to be a setter forth of strange gods: because he preached unto them Jesus, and the resurrection. And they took him, and brought him unto Areopagus, saying, May we know what this new doctrine, whereof thou speakest, is? For thou bringest certain strange things to our ears: we would know therefore what these things mean. (For all the Athenians and strangers which were there spent their time in nothing else, but either to tell, or to hear some new thing.) Then Paul stood in the midst of Mars' hill, and said, Ye men of Athens, I perceive that in all things ye are too superstitious. For as I passed by, and beheld your devotions, I found an altar with this inscription, TO THE UNKNOWN GOD. Whom therefore ye ignorantly worship, him declare I unto you. God that made the world and all things therein, seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands; Neither is worshipped with men's hands, as though he needed any thing, seeing he giveth to all life, and breath, and all things; And hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth, and hath determined the times before appointed, and the bounds of their habitation; That they should seek the Lord, if haply they might feel after him, and find him, though he be not far from every one of us: For in him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain also of your own poets have said, For we are also his offspring. Forasmuch then as we are the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Godhead is like unto gold, or silver, or stone, graven by art and man's device. And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent: Acts 17:16-30

 

God never dwells in idols.

The Almighty God who created the whole earth and all things in it, the Lord of heaven and earth, does not dwell in statues, idols, images made with the hands of men.

We are taught through the Word of God, that God does not live in statues, idols made by the hands of men, but that God lives IN us. 

In God we live, move and exist, for we are His offspring.

God gives life to all things, breathing life into every creature, needs nothing from us.  We must not think of God as graven images of gold, or silver, or stone made by man's devices.

God is not in statues made of any material, God is not in any image we can make of Him.

 


Who are idolaters?

 

They that make a graven image are all of them vanity; and their delectable things shall not profit; and they are their own witnesses; they see not, nor know; that they may be ashamed. Who hath formed a god, or molten a graven image that is profitable for nothing? Isaiah 44:9-10

An idolater is a user an/or worshipper of idols; a person who practices idolatry; a person that admires intensely and often blindly on that is not usually a subject of worship.

The word of God states idolaters are more than just those who bow down to images of stone.

So you say you don't worship any statue, so you say you do not have any idols in your life, are you sure?

An idol doesn't necessarily mean a statue of something, it can be 'any representation or symbol that is worshipped'.

Is there anything in your life that you worship, besides God?  Are you sure?

For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also. Luke 12:34

The word of God reads where your treasure is, is where your heart is, but remember, we are to love the Lord our God with all our heart.

Be careful with the things you love, that they don't replace God in your life, that they don't become your 'idol'.

The word of God reads you are not to hold anyone above Him. 

Do you worship your children, or husband or wife?  No one is to be placed before God, no one.

You can love your children, or spouse, more than anything else in the world, just not more than God.

Is your work, your job, your career, your idol?  Do you constantly think, are you obsessed every minute with your job?  Do you put your job above everything?  Do you put your job above God? 

What do you spend most of your time doing, your free time, the time away from your work?  Don't permit your hobby to become an idol. 

We must keep our hobbies in check.  We must balance them in our lives and not let them become an obsession with us.  Our hobby should never become our idol.  We must not let anything come before God in our lives.

If you have a few hours of free time, what are you doing with them?  Are you obsessed with anything?   Is there something you have to do every day, no matter what?

Are there things in your life that you are placing before God? Anything?  What are the 'idols' in your life that you need to get rid of?

Throw away all your idols.  Get rid of them forever.  The word of God reads we must repent and turn from our idols.

Pray and ask God to forgive you of placing anyone or anything before Him in your life. 

 


Who do idolaters worship?

God says that He is NOT inside of any idols.  God says those who worship and serve idols do NOT worship or serve God. 

God says that no one worships HIM through idols or with idols, through or with images of any kind.

So who do all these billions of people worship, if they are not worshipping God?  If they are not worshipping the one true God, who is not worshipped through or with idols, they are worshipping other gods.

Who are billions of people in the world today worshipping through or with idols?  They are worshipping other gods.

No one worships God, the One True God Almighty, the Saviour of the world, the Eternal King, the Highest Great Mighty God of Heaven, the Light, Jehovah, the LORD GOD, the Creator, the One and Only True God, the Way, the Truth and the Life, through any image.

How do we know this?  Because God says so in His Holy Word.

No law, no creed, no revelation, no vision, no person, no ruler, no leader, no president, no male, no female, no spirit, no angel, no devil, no one replaces, or cancels out, or overrides, or supersedes the word of God.

No one can rewrite the Word of God.  Throughout time many people have tried to rewrite the word of God to fit their own doctrine.  God says that NO ONE is to add to or subtract from HIS HOLY WORD.

All people must turn from idols and turn to the one true living God.

What is the destiny of all idolaters?

Eternity without God is the destiny of all idolaters, who do NOT repent of this sin against God.

And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent: Acts 17:16-30

 

Do not be deceived, idolaters will NOT inherit the Kingdom of God.

Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind,  Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God. 1 Corinthians 6:9-10

Idolaters have their part in the lake with burneth with fire and brimstone.

He that overcometh shall inherit all things; and I will be his God, and he shall be my son. But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death. Revelation 21:8

 

Idolaters are without God, remaining forever outside the gates of Heaven, and will not gain entrance into the eternal city of God.

Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city.  For without are dogs, and sorcerers, and whoremongers, and murderers, and idolaters, and whosoever loveth and maketh a lie. Revelation 22:14

 


How do I repent from idolatry?

Throw away all your idols.  Get rid of them forever.  The word of God reads you must repent and turn to God and turn from your idols.

And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent: Acts 17:16-30

For they themselves shew of us what manner of entering in we had unto you, and how ye turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God; 1 Thessalonians 1:9

Pray and ask God to forgive you of placing anyone or anything before Him in your life.  Surrender all of your life to Christ Jesus.

Submit yourself completely to God.

Pray and ask God to keep idols out of your life and to deliver you from all temptation.  Pray and ask for the power of God to resist all idols and idolatry.

The following is an example of prayer for repentance and forgiveness of idolatry against God.  You must pray your own prayer from your heart with godly sorrow, just repeating these words is not prayer, prayer is from your own heart.

Be specific as possible when you pray, name each idol in your life, and repent of each idol by its name.

 

Prayer for repentance of idols and idolatry:

Dear Heavenly Father, Thank you so much for all the wonderful gifts you have given me in my life.   Precious Father, you mean more to me than anything else in my life.  Jesus, I surrender all my life to you.  Thank you for saving my soul. With all my heart, I repent from sinning against you with idols in my life and will turn from the idols in my life forever. Please forgive me for placing anything above you.  Help me keep idols out of my life.  Show me dear Lord when I get off track or put anything above you. Dear Lord God, I love you with all my heart, with all my soul, with all my mind and with all my strength.  I praise your most Holy name. I receive your forgiveness and thank you dear Heavenly Father for delivering me from idolatry and I praise your Holy name. I love you Lord GOD.  I pray all this in Jesus Christ's name, Amen.


Love the Lord thy God and keep his commandments.

Therefore thou shalt keep the commandments of the LORD thy God, to walk in his ways, and to fear him. Deuteronomy 8:6

Therefore thou shalt love the LORD thy God, and keep his charge, and his statutes, and his judgments, and his commandments, alway. Deuteronomy 11:1

Know therefore that the LORD thy God, he is God, the faithful God, which keepeth covenant and mercy with them that love him and keep his commandments to a thousand generations; Deuteronomy 7:9
