The Power of JESUS

This is a Bible study on the Power of JESUS.     Click here for a printable Bible Study Guide.

And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Matthew 28:18

What is power?

The dictionary defines power as the ability to act or produce an effect; capacity for being acted upon or undergoing an effect; legal or official authority, capacity, or right; possession of control, authority, or influence over others; one having such power; specifically : a sovereign state; a controlling group; physical might; mental or moral efficacy; political control or influence.

We see many powers in this world today.  We have political powers and physical powers, placed on us in the world by other people, which are the legal or official authority of our government.  We have our own physical limited powers, that enable us to walk, talk and function in this world.  We also have powers over our minds to analyze and choose how we live our lives.  We also have events in our lives that control our thoughts, redirect our thought processes all throughout our lives.

Man is limited through his own self as to the amount of power he has over his life.  Man cannot control God.  Man does not have power over God.

There is no power greater than the power of God, for the Lord God omnipotent reigns, Alleluia!

God is all powerful, almighty, omnipotent, and limitless.

And I heard as it were the voice of a great multitude, and as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of mighty thunderings, saying, Alleluia: for the Lord God omnipotent reigneth. Revelation 19:6

What is the Power of Jesus?

Jesus has power over death

Therefore doth my Father love me, because I lay down my life, that I might take it again. No man taketh it from me, but I lay it down of myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This commandment have I received of my Father. John 10:17-18

Jesus died on the cross for our sins and He rose from His grave to eternal life, just like we will also receive live over death, through the power of Jesus and the mercy of God through salvation.

Jesus has power to forgive sins

No one else but God can forgive sins.

While Jesus walked this earth he had power on earth to forgive sins.  Now that He has ascended into Heaven and sits on the right hand side of God the Father, He forgives sins from His throne in Heaven.

But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power on earth to forgive sins, (then saith he to the sick of the palsy,) Arise, take up thy bed, and go unto thine house. And he arose, and departed to his house. But when the multitude saw it, they marvelled, and glorified God, which had given such power unto men. Matthew 9:6

But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power on earth to forgive sins, (he saith to the sick of the palsy,) Mark 2:10

But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power upon earth to forgive sins, (he said unto the sick of the palsy,) I say unto thee, Arise, and take up thy couch, and go into thine house. Luke 5:24

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 1 John 1:9

I write unto you, little children, because your sins are forgiven you for his name's sake. 1 John 2:12

By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all. And every priest standeth daily ministering and offering oftentimes the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins: But this man, after he had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever, sat down on the right hand of God; For by one offering he hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified. And their sins and iniquities will I remember no more. Hebrews 10:10-12, 17

Jesus is the head of all principality and power

Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ. For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily. And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power: Colossians 2:8-10

And Jesus answered and said unto him, Get thee behind me, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve. Luke 4:6-8

Who has power over Jesus?

No one but God the Father has any power over Jesus.  Only God has power over Himself.

Then saith Pilate unto him, Speakest thou not unto me? knowest thou not that I have power to crucify thee, and have power to release thee? Jesus answered, Thou couldest have no power at all against me, except it were given thee from above: therefore he that delivered me unto thee hath the greater sin. John 19:10-11

Do believers in Christ have power?

Did you know that as a believer in Christ, we have special powers?  God gives His children the spirit of power and of love and of a sound mind.

Believers have the spirit of power

Believers are given by God the spirit of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.  Believers of God are not given the spirit of fear.

For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind. 2 Timothy 1:7

Believers are kept by the power of God

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, To an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you, Who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. 1 Peter 1:3-5

Believers are given power to become the children of God

But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. John 1:12-13

Nothing can separate believers from the love of God

Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us. For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 8:37-39

What is the power of God?

The power of God is the ultimate power and the only power.

The word of God reads every soul is subject to higher powers and that there is no power but of God.

All power given to anyone is from God only.

Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God. Romans 13:1

The preaching of the cross is the power of God

For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God. 1 Corinthians 1:18

Christ the power of God

But unto them which are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God. 1 Corinthians 1:24

His divine power gives us all life and godliness

According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue: Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust. 2 Peter 1:3-4

Who can resist the power of God?

Whosoever therefore resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God: and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation. For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to the evil. Wilt thou then not be afraid of the power? do that which is good, and thou shalt have praise of the same: For he is the minister of God to thee for good. But if thou do that which is evil, be afraid; for he beareth not the sword in vain: for he is the minister of God, a revenger to execute wrath upon him that doeth evil. Romans 13:2-4

How to receive the power of Jesus?

The power of Jesus is received through repentance to salvation, through repentance of sin, through confessing the Jesus Christ is Lord, believing that He is all He says He is in His Word.

We are given the ability to receive the power of Jesus through the salvation of God.

By receiving the gift of God - which is eternal salvation we receive the power of Jesus to perform all that God has for us purposed.

What can the power of Jesus do?

Scripture tells us of the great and mighty miracles that Jesus performed while He was on this earth.

Jesus healed people of evil spirits, made the blind see, made the lame walk, made the mute speak, made the deaf hear, cured illness and disease, cast out demons from many, and many more miracles that we will not know of until we see Him in Glory.  The Word of God states that we will do greater works than these.

Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father.  John 14:12

In salvation we put on Christ, put on His righteousness, and through Christ to salvation we are given His power to do great and wondrous things for the Kingdom of God, for God, so the Father may be glorified in the Son (John 14:13).

And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.  If ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it.  John 14:12-14

The power of Jesus that is gifted to us is limitless.  There is nothing that we cannot do with the power of Jesus.

I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.  Philippians 4:13

If the power of Jesus is calling you, pulling at your heart, listen to Him, let Him come into your life, receive the free gift of salvation from God.

Believe in Jesus and be cleansed from all your sins, be forgiven, receive eternal life.
