Receiving Salvation Myths

This is a Bible study on Myths on Receiving Salvation.     Click here for a printable Bible Study Guide.

Truth comes from God.  We must turn to God and to His Holy word for the truth concerning all the things of God.

Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.   John 14:6

For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.   Ephesians 2:8-9

And Thomas answered and said unto him, My Lord and my God. Jesus saith unto him, Thomas, because thou hast seen me, thou hast believed: blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed.   John 20:28-29

Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap. For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting.   Galatians 6:7-8

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.   John 3:16-18

All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: 2 Timothy 3:16

What are Salvation Myths?

A myth is an opinion, belief, or idea that has no basis in truth.

There are many myths, untruths about salvation.  These false teachings have been in this world since the beginning of time and will be here until the end of time.  Some myths are about salvation itself, some are before, some are after, and some are in between.

Know this, there is only one truth, the truth of God.  All questions about the salvation of God are answered in His Holy Word.  The salvation of God belongs to God alone, no one else, therefore no one but God Himself can give salvation or answer questions regarding His salvation.

Salvation myths are beliefs about salvation that are not shown true by the word of God.

If any belief is different than what God said in His word, it is not true.  Any gospel or doctrine other than God's is called false doctrine.

The word of God came from God to holy men, who wrote down what God said.  The word of God is not any private interpretation from any man, it is from the Jehovah God Almighty, the Creator of the universe.

Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation. 2 Peter 1:20

We must prove everything we believe by the word of God and the Holy Spirit who dwells inside every believer.

All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: 2 Timothy 3:16

The only way to know if something said is true or false is to prove it by the word of God.

But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name. John 20:31

Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. 2 Timothy 2:15

For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. Hebrews 4:12

There are so many myths in the world today regard God's salvation, in this discussion, we will look at some of the most common salvation myths:

Myths regarding RECEIVING Salvation

Following are some common myths on receiving salvation.

Myth 1:  Salvation is NOT received by the grace of God alone

One of the most common, most spread myths about the salvation of God is that it is not received by the grace of God alone.

The Holy Scriptures tell us all that by grace ye are saved - nothing else.  Believing in something other than just the grace of God alone voids anyone's salvation.

Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;) Ephesians 2:5

Myth 2:  Certain ceremonies must be performed before you are saved

We are given the gift of God - eternal salvation - by receiving His gift of salvation through our faith - by believing in God - believing that God is all who He says that He is in His word - and by nothing else.  God saves,  not of works, not of ceremony.

For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast. Ephesians 2:8-9

Myth 3:  Genuine salvation is received only through a particular religion

Salvation belongs to God and not to any particular religion.

Salvation belongeth unto the LORD: thy blessing is upon thy people. Selah. Psalm 3:8

God alone owns His salvation, God alone gives His salvation, the Salvation of God is for ALL people, not any particular group or particular religion, because the One True Living Jehovah God Almighty is no respecter of persons (Acts 10:34).

Myth 4:  Nothing is required by God to receive salvation

We are all saved by God the exact same way - by the grace of God through faith in God.  Grace and faith are requirements of salvation.

For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast. Ephesians 2:8-9

But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him. Hebrews 11:6

God gifts each person grace and gifts each person faith to accept, believe and receive His salvation.

Myth 5:  Works are required to receive salvation

Many false religions of this evil world, teach that their followers must do certain things, works in order to be saved.

When people say that you must do works, other things, in order to receive salvation they DO NOT believe in the word of God.

Salvation is not a by-product of our doing.  When people say they must do things in order to receive salvation they are says that salvation is something we earn, rather than a gift.

God said that salvation is His gift that He freely gives to those who believe in His Son, Jesus Christ.

God says over and over in His scriptures that salvation is the gift from God and cannot be obtained by any type or any amount of works from any person.

For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. Romans 6:23

Salvation is the gift of God, given to us by the grace of God through faith in His Son, Jesus Christ.  Salvation is the gift of God given to us, NOT a gift by any works we can do.

For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast. Ephesians 2:8-9

Salvation is the gift of God, given freely to all who believe in His Son, Jesus Christ and put their trust in Him.

The gift of God cannot be purchased with any type of money, any type of penance, any type of sacrifice on our part, any type of service we can do for God.

God will not accept anything we can do, to receive salvation.  Salvation is the free gift of God received by any person who believes in His Son, Jesus Christ for their salvation from sin and death.

Salvation was made free to us, because the Son of God, Jesus Christ, gave is life for the sins of the world, so the would could receive eternal life.

Salvation was purchased by Jesus Christ, we do not and cannot do anything to receive salvation, salvation is a gift given freely from God to all people who believe in His Son, Jesus Christ.

You could walk around the world with a sign around your neck about God and you still would not be saved.

You could crawl on your knees up thousands of steps in the name of God and you still would not be saved.

You could go door to door for the rest of your life preaching the word of God and you would still not be saved.

The only way to receive the gift of Salvation from God is to believe in His Son, Jesus Christ, and accept Jesus into your life to be the ruler of your life, your Saviour and Lord.

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. John 3:16

Salvation belongs to God and He alone can give salvation.  We are saved according to God's mercy, NOT BY OUR WORKS.

Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;  Which he shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Saviour;  That being justified by his grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life. Titus 3:5

Myth 6:  Once a person "says" that they are saved, they are saved

Not everyone that says that they are saved have received the salvation of God.

Professing salvation is not necessarily possessing salvation.  Many people claim to be saved but are not.

They profess that they know God; but in works they deny him, being abominable, and disobedient, and unto every good work reprobate. Titus 1:16

Saying you are saved does not mean that you have received the salvation of God.

Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.  Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?  And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity. Matthew 7:21-23

Myth 7:  Baptism is required for salvation

God saves.

Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life. John 5:24

God saves, not baptism.

Unbelief separates anyone from God for eternity, not baptism.

God said he that believeth not shall be damned, and not he that is not baptized (Mark 16:16).

Myth 8:  Repentance is NOT required for salvation

Can people be saved but haven't repented, turned from their sin?

Repentance, turning from sin, is a requirement for salvation.

Only godly sorrow gives us repentance to salvation.

For godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of: but the sorrow of the world worketh death. 2 Corinthians 7:10

People not willing to repent of sin will perish. God does NOT want anyone to perish.

The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. 2 Peter 3:9

If they shall fall away, to renew them again unto repentance; seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put him to an open shame. Hebrews 6:6

We must have repentance toward God and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ.

Testifying both to the Jews, and also to the Greeks, repentance toward God, and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ. Acts 20:21

We are to repent from sin and turn to God.

But shewed first unto them of Damascus, and at Jerusalem, and throughout all the coasts of Judaea, and then to the Gentiles, that they should repent and turn to God, and do works meet for repentance. Acts 26:20

All sinners everywhere must repent or perish.

But go ye and learn what that meaneth, I will have mercy, and not sacrifice: for I am not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance. Matthew 9:13

When Jesus heard it, he saith unto them, They that are whole have no need of the physician, but they that are sick: I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance. Mark 2:17

I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance. Luke 5:32

I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish. Luke 13:3

Who will perish? Who will die in hell?  All who do NOT repent of sin.

I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish. Luke 13:5

Repent and be converted.  Conversion comes through repentance.

Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord; Acts 3:19

Repent of wickedness and pray to God for forgiveness.  We receive forgiveness from God only when we repent.

Repent therefore of this thy wickedness, and pray God, if perhaps the thought of thine heart may be forgiven thee. Acts 8:22

Eternal LIFE is granted by the Grace of God through Faith in Jesus by repentance.

When they heard these things, they held their peace, and glorified God, saying, Then hath God also to the Gentiles granted repentance unto life. Acts 11:18

God commands that ALL PEOPLE everywhere to repent.

And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent:  Because he hath appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom he hath ordained; whereof he hath given assurance unto all men, in that he hath raised him from the dead. Acts 17:30-31

If you are not willing to forsake sin, walk away from your sin, you cannot have the salvation of God.  God requires surrender of all sin.  We must abandon all sin to come to God.   We either abandon sin, or we abandon God.  We either take up sin, or we take up God.  We must let go of one to hold onto the other.  No one can hold onto both.

Myth 9:  Certain people can forgive my sins

Forgiveness of sins is received with salvation.  Only God can give anyone His salvation, and only God can forgive sins.

No one else but God can forgive anyone of sin.  No one but God can forgive sins.

You sins are only forgiven by God Himself, no one else.

God alone has the power to forgive people of their sins.

None but God can forgive your sins.  No other person on this earth can forgive anyone of their sins, because only God can forgive sin.

The word of God clearly states that NO priest can forgive your sins, because only God forgives sins.  Do not be deceived by the words of man, only God forgives sins.

Many people falsely believe that certain people can forgive sins.

Only God can forgive sins.  Only Jesus has the power to forgive sins.

No person, priest, nun, pastor, religious leader, worker, no one can take away our sins, only God can take away sins.

Our offerings can never take away sins.

Our sacrifices can never take away sins.

Nothing but the blood of Jesus takes away our sins.

By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all. And every priest standeth daily ministering and offering oftentimes the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins: But this man, after he had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever, sat down on the right hand of God; From henceforth expecting till his enemies be made his footstool. For by one offering he hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified. Hebrews 10:10-14

Myth 10:  Salvation is negotiable

Salvation is NOT negotiable, no one can make a deal with God to change His rules of salvation.

No one can negotiate with God regarding the terms of salvation.

Since salvation belongs to God, He alone set the terms, the requirements of receiving His salvation.

You cannot make a deal with God to receive salvation.

There is no compromise as to the terms of salvation.

God owns salvation, it is His alone, and only He can negate the terms of receiving His salvation.

The perfect plan of salvation is given to all mankind by God in love, because He loves us and with His love.  God knows what is best for all His creation.

Everyone receives the salvation of God the same way which is through God, by seeking out God, by coming to God for His salvation, and receiving salvation from God.

Look unto me, and be ye saved, all the ends of the earth: for I am God, and there is none else. Isaiah 45:22

There is only one true LORD God Almighty, none else (1 Kings 8:60).

What can I do to stop salvation myths?

KNOW what God says about them.  Learn the word of God.  Memorize the word of God.  Write God's words on the tables of your heart.

Be prepared with the truth of God to give an answer to those who spread lies about God and His Word.

Jesus says that we err, not knowing the scriptures, nor the power of God (Matthew 22:29).

Know the ways of God, fellowship with God through prayer and worship, seek answers from God.  Build your faith, strengthen your faith through wisdom, understanding, and knowledge from God and His word.

In love, be ready at all times to defend your faith and beliefs in Christ Jesus.

In order to tell others the truth of God, you must know it yourself.  Know the Word.  Know the truth of God.  Only through a personal relationship with God can you know His will, know His truth and follow His will.

What will happen to people who change the word of God?

Anyone who alters the word of God, and does not repent of their sin, will be eternally separated from God, will face eternal damnation.

We must be so careful, not to lean on our own understanding, but lean on God, learn from God, seek the understanding and wisdom of God.

We must never alter the word of God for any reason.  God will accept no excuse for sin.

For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book: And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book. Revelation 22:18-19

God not only wants us to know His word, but He wants us to live it!
